The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a central university established by an act of parliament, namely the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on November 14, 2008. IMU is the first central university in India to be dedicated to the maritime field and related activities. The headquarters of IMU is located in Chennai, and its campuses are spread across the country. The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a central university in India that offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the field of maritime studies. The admission for the IMU courses is based on the IMU CET examination. The campus offers courses in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Naval architecture, and Offshore Engineering, along with a Master's programme in Port and Shipping Management. 

IMU Mumbai Port has four schools: School of Marine Engineering and Technology, the School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, the School of Maritime Engineering, and the School of Nautical Studies. It also has a research center and a library. The university is located at MERI, Mumbai, Hay Bunder Road. Mumbai- 400033. The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (Mumbai Airport), located 15 kilometers from the college. The Sewri local railway station is 2.5 kilometers away from the campus.
