The institute was established in 1956. International Institute for Population Sciences was formerly known as Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970. International Institute for Population Sciences was established under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and the United Nations. International Institute for Population Sciences has a total of seven academic departments- the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Department of Fertility and Social Demography, Department of Public Health and Mortality Studies, Department of Migration and Urban Studies, Department of Population and Development, Department of Family and Generations, Department of Survey Research and Data Analytics and Department of Extra Mural Studies and Distance Education. International Institute for Population Sciences is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. On August 14, 1985, International Institute for Population Sciences was declared as a 'Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. International Institute for Population Sciences is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC).
