Established in the year 1951, National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad is a public university. It works autonomously under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. The university has been declared as an ‘Institute of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act 2014. The varsity has 64 faculty members in total. NID Ahmedabad offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The university offers a total of 17 courses.
Admission to all the courses other than Ph.D programmes is done based on marks obtained by candidates in NID DAT. It is mandatory for candidates to clear both prelims and mains of NID DAT to take admission in National Institute of Design Ahmedabad. For admission to Ph.D courses, the varsity conducts Design Research Test (DRT) and a personal interview. Students enrolled in B.Des and M.Des programmes can avail numerous state level and national level scholarships.
