 National Institute of Technology (NIT) is residential in nature but it gives its staff and students the facility of a bus service. The bus runs thrice a day from the college bus stand to Gopal Maidan at Bishtupur and vice-versa. It has three other stoppages at NIT Main gate, Road No. Four of Adityapur colony, All India Radio (Adityapur) respectively.

National Institute of Technology (NIT) has a total of 13 hostels - 9 for Boys and 4 for Girls. The college campus  maintains courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis

On 27th December 2002, in the line of all other RECs of India, RIT Jamshedpur was converted to National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur with the status of a Deemed University as per the decision of Government of India. The Institute is fully funded and governed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

It was established on 15th August 1960 as a joint venture of Government of India and the Government of Bihar in the chain of REC's (Regional Engineering College) in India.
