Ranchi University is an autonomous institution established on July 12, 1960. The varsity came into existence after the bifurcation from Bihar University. Initially, the varsity started with 20 affiliated colleges, 10 PG departments, and a single constituent college. Currently, Ranchi University has expanded to 22 Postgraduate departments, 47 affiliated colleges, and 19 constituent colleges. Ranchi University is the home carting education to 1.6lakh students. The varsity split into four universities including Vinoba Bhave University (BHU), Nilambar Pitambar University (NPU), and Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU).

Ranchi University (RU) offers a diverse range of academic programs, including undergraduate, postgraduate, engineering, medicine/dental, vocational, and research courses. Currently, the university has introduced several new programs in fields such as Yoga, Medicine, Psychiatry, Law, Management, and Engineering. Additionally, RU has enriched its traditional courses by incorporating innovative and cutting-edge content.

The university has also expanded its offerings to include self-financing/vocational courses at both the postgraduate and undergraduate levels. These courses encompass subjects like Electronics and Communication, M.C.A (Master of Computer Applications), Bio-technology, Diploma in Medicinal Plants, Jyotirvigyan (Astrology), among others at the postgraduate level. At the undergraduate level, RU now provides programs like B.C.A (Bachelor of Computer Applications), B. Ed (Bachelor of Education), Functional English, Secretarial Practice, Environment and Water Management, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, and Fashion Technology, to name a few.

The amenities provided by Ranchi University extend beyond the library, hostel, sports, national services, SC/ST cell, and coaching classes. The university also features a well-equipped Training and Placement Cell with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi access, an advanced group discussion hall, and a conference hall.
