Sambalpur University is a state university which was established in 1996 with an act by Odisha Legislature. The university is functioning since January 1997, offering a wide range of PG, Mphil and Phd courses. Admission to PG courses is provided through Common PG Entrance Test (CPET). Sambalpur University earlier started functioning in a rented private building and then in a government building in Ainthapali, Sambalpur from 1968 to 73. In 1973 the university was permanently shifted to its present campus called Jyoti Vihar situated at Burla, Sabalpur.

Sambalpur University has been recognised by the UGC and it has been accredited by the NAAC with an ‘A’ grade.

A candidate who has passed graduation with 2 years work experience, is eligible for admission to the Sambalpur University executive M.B.A course.
