SASTRA Deemed University, also known as the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology, and Research Academy, is a prestigious higher education institution in Tamil Nadu's Thirumalaisamudram village. Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy was established in 1984 and was granted deemed university status in the year 2001 under Section 3 of the UGC Act by the Government of India in 1956. SASTRA University has eight colleges, two centres, and a distance education directorate that delivers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in technology, engineering, medicine, education, the arts, law, and administration. A three-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) is signed between AstraZeneca India Private Limited (AZIPL), the Global Capability Centre (GCC) and SASTRA University which will facilitate industry-academia collaboration through various research and development activities. The MoU aims to provide opportunities to develop new technologies in the academic departments at SASTRA, ABLEST (The Association of Bio-Inspired Leaders and Entrepreneurs at SASTRA).
On the occasion of the National Science Day Awards, Sastra Deemed to be University announced it will establish a virtual reality facility in 75 schools in Tamil Nadu. On National Science Day, SASTRA honours and rewards women
The SASTRA-Professor Saroj Chandrasekhar Memorial Award was founded in collaboration with the Chandrasekhar Foundation to honour and award female doctoral candidates in the third or fourth year of study.
An all-women team from the SASTRA School of Law comprising three final year students of the 5-Year Integrated LLB programme - Thejaswini .C.B., Pavitra. M & Kavitha Ravi won the 6th Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon SAARC Law Mooting Competition organised by Lloyd Law College, Noida. This SAARC Moot saw the participation of 18 Law Schools from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, Maldives and Afghanistan. The moot problem was on an environmental law issue involving the UN Framework Convention on climate change.
SASTRA University celebrated National Science Day virtually. The audience were welcomed by Prof. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Vice-Chancellor, SASTRA. SASTRA Student Designs World’s Lightest Femto Satellite For Nasa Launch - S.Riyasdeen of SASTRA Deemed University has designed the World’s Lightest Femto Satellite For Nasa Launch and has brought laurels by winning the Cubes in Space Global Design Competition for Space Launch in NASA Rocket & Scientific Balloon. This competition was organised at the international level and around 1000 students from 73 countries participated here. The satellites designed by S.Riyasdeen shall be a part of the SR-7 NASA Rocket Mission expected to be launched from the Wallops Flight Facility, Viriginia, USA in June 2021 and Sat v2 shall be part of the NASA Balloon Mission RB-6 scheduled for launch in August 2021.

Some of the Sastra University facilities are a library, gym, hostels, cafeteria etc. In fields like management, architecture, and law, the SASTRA University Central library has about 1,02,600 books and 290 journals and magazines. The SASTRA University campus has two Indian overseas bank branches that can be reached at any point of the day, and the department of post and telegraph provides postal facilities within the campus. The university offers diploma, UG, PG and doctoral courses for admissions. B.Tech, B.Sc.,B.Com, M.Tech, M.B.A. are some of the courses offered for SASTRA University admissions.
