SASTRA Deemed University, also known as the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology, and Research Academy, is a prestigious higher education institution in Tamil Nadu's Thirumalaisamudram village. Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy was established in 1984 and was granted deemed university status in the year 2001 under Section 3 of the UGC Act by the Government of India in 1956. SASTRA University has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an 'A++' grade.  Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology, and Research Academy is deemed to be a university. SASTRA University is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). SASTRA University ranked 38th in the engineering category, 17th in the law category, 50th in the research category, 22nd in the university category and 42nd in the overall category in the NIRF 2021 Ranking.

SASTRA University has eight colleges, two centres, and a distance education directorate that delivers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in technology, engineering, medicine, education, the arts, law, and administration. The SASTRA University offers a vast array of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, all of which are supported by research and theoretical structure. Following the classes, students can pursue thesis and dissertation studies at the doctoral level, which will allow them to gain a deeper and vivid understanding of the core concepts. Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology, and Research Academy is located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, at Trichy-Tanjore Road, Thirumalaisamudram. The institution is about 11 kilometres from Alakkudi Railway Station. SASTRA University is about a kilometre away from Sastra Bus Depot. To get there, visitors can rent a car or take an auto-rickshaw. Traveling to Sastra University from Trichy Airport takes 2 hours and 7 minutes. The distance between Sastra University and Trichy Airport is approximately 106 kilometres (65.9 miles) or 57.2 nautical miles.

• SASTRA University collaborates with AstraZeneca India to propel innovation and industry academia collaboration

A three-year memorandum of understanding  (MOU) is signed between AstraZeneca India Private Limited (AZIPL), the Global Capability Centre (GCC) and SASTRA University which will facilitate industry-academia collaboration through various research and development activities. The MoU aims to provide opportunities to develop new technologies in the academic departments at SASTRA, ABLEST (The Association of Bio-Inspired Leaders and Entrepreneurs at SASTRA). 

• SASTRA University to establish VR Facility in 75 schools across Tamil Nadu

On the occasion of the National Science Day Awards, Sastra Deemed to be University announced it will establish a virtual reality facility in 75 schools in Tamil Nadu. The VR facility will provide students with an immersive & experiential learning experience. The cost of each VR facility is estimated to be around Rs. 2 lakhs.

SASTRA University held a virtual celebration of National Science Day. SASTRA University and the Chandrasekhar Foundation founded the SASTRA-Prof. Saroj Chandrasekhar Memorial Award in order to honour and reward the female candidates. 

• SASTRA student has developed the world's lightest Femto satellite, which will be launched by Nasa 

S.Riyasdeen of SASTRA University designed the World's Lightest Femto Satellite For Nasa Launch and won the Cubes in Space Global Modeling Competition for Space Launch in NASA Rocket & Scientific Balloon, bringing laurels to the university.

• SASTRA and TCS collaborate to provide proctored hybrid end-of-semester exams

SASTRA academic council has collaborated with TCS to administer a remote proctored hybrid end-term exam for students' evaluation for the academic year 2020-2021.

• On National Science Day, SASTRA honours and rewards women

The SASTRA-Professor Saroj Chandrasekhar Memorial Award was founded in collaboration with the Chandrasekhar Foundation to honour and award female doctoral candidates in the third or fourth year of study. 

• SASTRA Law School all Girls Team Wins SAARC Law Mooting Competition   

An all-women team from the SASTRA School of Law comprising three final year students of the 5-Year Integrated LLB programme - Thejaswini .C.B., Pavitra. M & Kavitha Ravi won the 6th Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon SAARC Law Mooting Competition organised by Lloyd Law College, Noida. This SAARC Moot saw the participation of 18 Law Schools from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, Maldives and Afghanistan. The moot problem was on an environmental law issue involving the UN Framework Convention on climate change.

• SASTRA celebrated National Science Day 

SASTRA University celebrated National Science Day virtually. The audience were welcomed by Prof. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Vice-Chancellor, SASTRA.  Dr Renu Swarup presented the SASTRA - G N Ramachandran Award to Prof. Ajay Kumar Ghatak, formerly Professor at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, the SASTRA –Obaid Siddiqi Award to Dr. Gitanjali Yadav, National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi and SASTRA – C N R Rao award for Chemistry and Materials Science for the year 2021 to Prof. A. K. Ganguli, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Prof. G. Mugesh, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore at the event. Adding further to the list SASTRA, along with Chandrasekhar Foundation, introduced the SASTRA-Prof. Saroj Chandrasekhar Memorial award in order to recognize and reward women candidates and Madhuchaturvedi, IIT Kanpur, Sayantani Sinha, CSIR, Jhadavpur University and Nishant Manzar, IIT Kanpur were the recipient of this award. 

SASTRA Student Designs World’s Lightest Femto Satellite For Nasa Launch - S.Riyasdeen of SASTRA Deemed University has designed the World’s Lightest Femto Satellite For Nasa Launch and has brought laurels by winning the Cubes in Space Global Design Competition for Space Launch in NASA Rocket & Scientific Balloon. This competition was organised at the international level and around 1000 students from 73 countries participated here. The satellites designed by S.Riyasdeen shall be a part of the SR-7 NASA Rocket Mission expected to be launched from the Wallops Flight Facility, Viriginia, USA in June 2021 and Sat v2 shall be part of the NASA Balloon Mission RB-6 scheduled for launch in August 2021.

Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy provides  various facilities to students. Some of the Sastra University facilities are a library, gym, hostels, cafeteria etc. In fields like management, architecture, and law, the SASTRA University Central library has about 1,02,600 books and 290 journals and magazines. The SASTRA University campus has two Indian overseas bank branches that can be reached at any point of the day, and the department of post and telegraph provides postal facilities within the campus. Candidates can visit SASTRA Cafeteria at any time; it is open 24/7 every day in the week for students. For the convenience of the students, numerous bookstores such as Canopy, Higginbothams, and Gurunath are located on the SASTRA University campus. 

SASTRA University has nine hostels with all the necessary amenities that make each inmate feel at ease. SASTRA University's sports complex is available to students and they are encouraged to take part in sports events and competitions. Facilities include a cricket field, basketball courts, badminton courts, football grounds, and more. SASTRA University offers a forum for conducting research and practical study in a variety of laboratories, primarily chemistry, electronic, biochemistry, survey, and English communication labs, which candidates may use. The university has a comprehensive health plan for all students. SASTRA University's hospitals and medical centres are open to students 24 hours a day and are serving 7 days a week to be available in the event of an emergency.

The university offers 120 courses for admissions. Sastra University courses are four levels - diploma, UG, PG and doctoral levels. At the UG level, the university offers 56 courses. Some of the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy UG courses are B.Tech, B.Com, B.Optom, B.Sc., etc. SASTRA University courses are offered in the streams like sciences, computer application, law, engineering etc. Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy PG courses are M.Tech,  M.Sc., M.B.A. etc.

SASTRA University Admissions

The university offers diploma, UG, PG and doctoral courses for admissions. B.Tech, B.Sc.,B.Com, M.Tech, M.B.A. are some of the courses offered for SASTRA University admissions. Admission to B.Tech and Integrated M.Tech is offered on the basis of Class 12th marks and JEE Main scores.  It must be noted that 70% of the total seats will be filled based on 10+2 marks and JEE Main scores and the remaining 30% of seats are filled on the basis of 10+2 marks. SASTRA University admissions to B.Sc./BA + B.Ed. integrated is offered on the basis of merit (marks obtained in the qualifying examination). GATE-qualified candidates will be given preference for SASTRA University M.Tech admission. For Ph.D. admissions, candidates are required to appear for an entrance test followed by an interview  conducted by SASTRA  University.

Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy offers generous financial assistance to students who apply for enrollment in a particular year, allowing economically disadvantaged students to finish their studies more quickly and effectively. SASTRA University scholarships are offered in both governmental and non-governmental forms. There are mostly two categories of scholarships available for students: Dean's merit list and later Hostel scholarship.
