Slipping away into mediocrity

St.Peter's Engineering College was a big name about 8 years back, but when I joined it, it became a deemed university and with that, the management felt it was free of the shackles of the Government imposed fee structure. They became too focused on money-making, without realising that the hard-earned name and infrastructure was slowly rotting away, along with dwindling student population. As a result, the quality of the faculty and the industry exposure suffered. But it must be said, one of the better things about it was a number of freedom students got. We could easily go attend workshops, arrange IVs by ourselves, without having to justify each and every detail to some HOD who probably did his degree before the British left India. The student crowd is extremely diverse, this being a University, and I could say barely 30% would be locals. Regarding placements, the last I heard was that it was down to a trickle, though that holds true to most engineering colleges now.But what really rankles is that it has been allowed to happen to this college, which used to be up there with the finest engineering institutes in Chennai!
