Maulana Azad College, Kolkata was established in 1924 and founded by Lord Lytton, the contemporary Governor of Bengal with the sole motive of promoting Islamic learning and general education among the Muslim population. Maulana Azad College, Kolkata is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The college was formerly known as Islamia College and was later renamed as Central Calcutta College. In 1960, the college was again renamed as Maulana Azad College in memory of the great national leader Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad. The college offers a total of 25 courses in the field of Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Commerce. 

The mission of Maulana Azad College is to promote integrated growth, intellectual, moral, and cultural and personal development in all students with special emphasis on students belonging to weaker sections of the society. Maulana Azad College offers UG and PG degree programmes such as BA, BSc, BCom Accounting and Finance Hons, MA, MSc, etc. It offers courses in various specializations. Some of the specializations offered by the college are BA Urdu Hons, BA Persian, BSc Economic Hons, BA Political Science, MA Urdu, MA English to name a few. The eligibility criteria for any undergraduate course is that students must have passed 10+2 with qualifying marks from a recognized board as per the course requirements. For postgraduate courses, a minimum of 55% marks in the Honours subject is mandatory for the candidates studying at the University of Calcutta or in its affiliated colleges, and 60 percent marks for non-CU candidates.

Maulana Azad College Admissions

There are 25 courses offered by the Maulana Azad College, Kolkata for admission at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In order to get admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses, students must meet the eligibility criteria as per the course requirements and college guidelines. The fees and duration of the courses will differ according to the course applied for. Students have to sit for a written examination conducted by the University of Calcutta followed by counselling to get admission to postgraduate courses at Maulana Azad College. 60% of the approved seats will be filled based on the merit of the students passed out as Honours Graduate from the University of Calcutta or its affiliated colleges. The rest 40% will be filled through the admission test and is open for both CU and NON-CU students.
