Maulana Azad College, Kolkata was established in 1924 and founded by Lord Lytton, the contemporary Governor of Bengal with the sole motive of promoting Islamic learning and general education among the Muslim population. Maulana Azad College, Kolkata is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The college was formerly known as Islamia College and was later renamed as Central Calcutta College. In 1960, the college was again renamed as Maulana Azad College in memory of the great national leader Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad.
