What is the full form of SGOT SGPT?

The liver is responsible for handling various metabolic functions in the body. In addition, the liver detoxifies the blood and It works from digesting food to making bile in the body. The liver also helps the body to fight infection, control blood sugar, remove toxins and reduce fat. The liver produces and secretes various enzymes to perform all these functions properly. SGOT and SGPT are the two most common enzymes produced by the liver if any person got a disease related to the liver like Alcoholic liver disease, Fatty liver, Hepatitis, Cirrhosis etc.These are all related to increasing the level of SGPT in the patient’s liver. The complete form of these two enzymes are-

1. SGOT - Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase.

2. SGPT - Serum Glutamate Pyruvate Transaminase.

SGOT

• In addition to the liver, SGOT is also found in the kidney, muscle, heart, and even the brain.

• SGOT levels may increase during liver complications, heart attacks or muscle injuries.

• SGOT is also known as Aspartate Transaminase (AST).

• It is responsible for metabolising amino acids.

• The normal level of SGOT is 5 to 40 units per litre of human blood serum.

SGPT

• SGPT enzymes only present inside the liver.

• SGPT levels can increase during liver diseases and liver tissue damage.

• SGPT is also known as Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT).

• The normal level of SGPT is 7 to 56 units per litre of human blood serum.
