    About College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri

    College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri, was established in the year 1981 and is one of the constituent colleges of the Maharashtra, devoted exclusively to fisheries education. The institute is situated in Shirgaon, Ratnagiri, and the institute occupies a total land area of 35.83 acres. Although it is an autonomous body, the programmes are recognised by the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) and it provides the complete spectrum of programmes in fisheries science or bio resources .

    College of Fisheries has a total student enrolment of 220 and has six professors teaching in the college. This is because the college is a co-educational institution a factor that implies that both boys and girls are allowed to learn all that is taught here. The college has all the necessary faculties to accommodate it’s academic courses. The library has a collection of 12,500 books including textbooks and reference books, 15 Indian journals in print and five foreign journals in online version annually. It also holds 315 theses of PG/Ph.D. discipline. The campus facilities include affiliated department laboratories to allow students be more inclined to a practical session. Hostel accommodation is available for male and female students. For promoting the physical well being of the students, the college provides a well furnished gymnasium and Sport facilities for indoor and outdoor games. Students can make use the first aid boxes available in case of minor ailments and for serious complications District Civil Hospital is a short drive of four kilometres away.

    As a whole, College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri has as many as 16 courses offered at 3 degree levels. The following are some of these full time programmes at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. The most popular programme is the Bachelor of Fisheries Science Honours under which the institute takes 44 students. In the postgraduate level of education, the college offers a variety of special options in M.F.Sc which include A\quaculture, Fish Biotechnology, Aquatic Environment Management as well as Fish Processing Technology among others. The Ph.D. programmes include Aquaculture, Fish Nutrition and Feed Technology, Fisheries Resource Management among others.

    To get into the College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri there requires booking for common entrance tests for admissions. For B.F.Sc, they have to appear for Common Entrance Test (CET of Directorate of Technical Education, Mumbai for B.F.Sc programme). Thus postgraduate admission are taken based on the CET Conducted by the Maharashtra Agricultural Universities Examination Board, Pune. It has introduced an online admission process with the help of Kalp Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (KTPL), Pune to organise the admission application and the selection process. The College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri, with all its vast courses offered, great infrastructure and quality selection criterion for admission still remain one of the best in fisheries.
