Kumily’s College of Teacher Education is one of the constituent colleges founded in Idukki, Kerala, in the year of 1994. This is a co-educational centre that is located on 2 and a half acres of land and has a teacher training college. Affiliated with the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the college mainly focuses on teacher training. The college is providing education to 100 students at a time, and the faculty member strength is 8; therefore, we have a proper student-teacher ratio to provide quality education. As of now, the institution can only award one degree programme, the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), because its emphasis is on teacher training.

College of Teacher Education is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. There is, therefore, a variety of teaching and learning facilities available for students in the College of Teacher Education, Kumily. The college library is one of the important learning resources which is very useful in providing students with a source of educational and literature materials. As for the practical training, there is a comfortable laboratory at the institution so that students can practise different aspects of education. Extra-curricular activities are also considered by the college, offering sporting amenities to achieve health-related objectives of the students. Further, an auditorium is made available within the compound, which acts as a centre for all occasions, seminars, courses and cultural performances, ensuring a lively student’s lifestyle.

In as much as its programmes of study and trainings are concerned, only the College of Teacher Education, Kumily, teaches teacher education. The institution has a two-year full course Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) programme. It aims at preparing novice teachers with adequate skills, knowledge, and teaching methods of the present-day teaching fraternity. Such a focus is beneficial since the institution is in a position to focus its resources and efforts toward achieving high-outcome producers of educators.

The eligibility for admission to the College of Teacher Education, Kumily, is that the candidate has to apply to the Centre for Professional and Advanced Studies, Kottayam, for admission. Applicants are expected to apply for admission before the set dates for application submission. After the application period, the college vets the applicants who apply and produces a list ordered by rank of those who meet the standards set by the college. Candidates are then invited for an interview as they come up with a shortlist. The student’s performance during the previous academic season, including coursework, marks, assignments, and examinations, is used to determine the lucky candidates. 

Finally, through merit and communal reservation, the final list of students is selected for admission. The college is very disciplined in the eligibility criteria it set for the B.Ed programme and thus maintains high standards of admission.
