Government Polytechnic Tumkur is a premier technical institution established in 1958 and is governed by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE). The foundation stone of the present building was laid by His Holiness Dr Sree Sree Shivakumara Swamigalu of Sree Siddaganga Mutt, and the institution was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru. Government Polytechnic Tumkur is run by the Department of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka.

Out of the total intake, 50% of seats are reserved for various reservation categories and the remaining 50% are allotted based on SSLC marks through Online Non-Interactive Counselling. Within each category, vertical reservation is applicable as follows: 30% for female candidates, 25% for rural candidates, 5% for Kannada medium candidates, and 3% for physically challenged candidates.

Admission to 1st year Diploma programmes is conducted by the Department of Technical Education (DTE), Karnataka.

Admission to Diploma courses is based on merit, following the reservation policy of the Government of Karnataka.
Candidates seeking lateral entry admission to the 3rd semester (Second Year) must have passed SSLC or an equivalent examination with a minimum of 35% aggregate marks.
Such candidates must also have passed ITI (2-year course) or completed PUC II.
Eligible candidates can apply for admission directly to the 3rd semester through the lateral entry scheme.
