The Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha was established in the year 1918. The mandate was the promotion of Hindi language literacy among the non- native speakers of the language, in South India. Annie Besant, who was the first female President of the Congress, was also behind setting up of this institute. Even Mahatma Gandhi endorsed this institution as he saw the Hindi language as a force for national unity. Back in 1964, the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha was recognized as an Institute of National Importance (INI). The institute is now directly affiliated by the UGC.
There are several courses on offer here, right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the undergrad level, there is the B. Ed. with focus on teaching the Hindi language. At the master’s stage, there is the M. Ed. and also the M.A. in Hindi. Post Graduate Diplomas (PGDs) are also here on offer. They are for the products- Journalism and for Translation. The research- oriented M. Phil. is also possible here. Also possible are the doctoral programmes. While the main centre of the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha is in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, there are smaller chapters strewn all over Telangana, Karnataka and in Kerala. These are in the cities of Hyderabad, Dharwad and Ernakulam respectively. There is even a foreign chapter in California, USA.
The Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha also runs a school by the name of Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya in Chennai itself. The institute runs a publications unit on campus. A literary magazine gets published known as Dakshina Bharat. Another is a monthly Hindi magazine titled Hindi Prachar Samachar. There is also a monthly magazine titled Hindi Patrika. This is for circulation mainly in Tamil Nadu itself. Articles get written on language and literature in both Hindi and Tamil. Similarly, in Kerala, there is the Keralbharati, in Malayalam and Hindi. In Karnataka, the bi- lingual edition is the Bharat Vani. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, there are two separate monthly magazines published. One is the Sravanti, which is in Telugu and the other is in Hindi, titled as the Poornakumbh.
Several levels of examinations are held each year here. Certifications are handed out after passing of each level. The convocation is another important event held annually here. In fact the auditorium where this is held in, is known as the Mahatma Gandhi Convocation Hall (Padavidan Mantap).
