SCMHRD is a fully residential campus and has two floors dedicated to management studies. The institute has seven centers of excellence including IT & Systems and Entrepreneurship. The list of electives for instance, is extensive and you can opt for modules on supply chain management, operations strategy or business modeling if your specialisation is Operations Management. “It is a myth that SCMHRD offers courses only in Human Resources and Development, in fact there are more students in marketing and finance specialisations, here,” a student informed us. Marketing is still the dominating discipline chosen by more than half the batch of 240 students.
Corporate tie-ups in the form of the SAP laboratory and the ORACLE centre give a fair idea about the institute’s focus on making the students industry savvy. In terms of placement, last year the number of job offers (194) exceeded the number of candidates. SCMHRD banks on the 32 core faculty members (of which 10 percent have a PhD) and it also depends on the visiting faculty and discipline associated experts. Students are very active and take part in a host of social initiatives.
The senior boys reside closer to the women’s hostel within the premises, while freshers live closer to the IIIT campus. Several of them use the bus service, which operates at fixed intervals to Pune city. There is a common mess facility as well as a gymnasium, indoor games and a swimming pool, all located in the SCHMRD campus.
The 31-year old institution has come a long way from being a permanent affiliated institution of the University of Pune (1990) to being an integral part of the Symbiosis International University today. Located on a hilltop in Lavale village, the students treasure the two years of their life as they pursue the residential MBA programme.
The students can opt to specialise in Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Operations Management and Marketing Communications. Though the course fees at over Rs. 7 lakhs are a tad higher than many of the institutions in Pune, it is the orientation of the programme and teaching methodology which attracts the students. “Group tasks, outdoor sessions, case studies, interactive lectures and projects are all part of the participatory learning process here at the institute,” says a student.
Many initiatives, be it social, cultural or academic are by undertaken by the students. The students’ council selects representatives to fulfil task-specific responsibilities and thus they have different teams such as alumni, corporate interface, co-curricular, IT and placement advisory team. It was also a pleasure visiting the knowledge resource centre. “We have over 18500 books, close to 125 periodicals, both online and off-line resources of which the most used is EBSCO, Industry Analysis Services and PROWESS by the management students,” Vasant Joshi, Advisor - Library, Symbiosis International University informs us. But for most students, the prime deciding factor in selecting SIBM is the placement record. The average remuneration for the 2007-2009 batch was Rs. 9 lakhs per annum.
