About College:

The Christian Medical College in Vellore (CMCV) was founded in the year 1900 by members of the Christian Missionaries. It is located in the state of Tamil Nadu. It was earlier affiliated to the Madras University but now with the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. A lot of firsts for India can be attributed to the CMCV. The first full- fledged college for nursing was set up here back in 1946. The first open heart surgery in 1961, first kidney transplant in 1971, the first bone marrow transplantation in 1986 and the maiden successful kidney transplant in 2009 are all Indian national records created here.

Several courses are on offer here. At the undergrad level, there is the MBBS, a BSc. in Nursing and Allied Health Sciences degrees. The BSc. in allied health sciences courses can be undertaken in the fields of – ICU Techniques, Optometry, Operation Theatre Technology, Emergency Responder, Dialysis Techniques, Anaesthesia Techniques, Cardiac Technology, Orthopaedic Assistant & Plaster Techniques, Medical Laboratory Technology and in Medical Radiography & Imaging Technology. Multiple diploma courses are also on offer. These are often lapped up by para- medical students. Another popular course here is the MPH (Master of Public Health). There is another six- year master’s level course on neurosurgery. Bioengineering is also available at the MS level. Not to be outdone, several nursing courses too can be undertaken. Physiotherapy is another popular area, now increasingly being explored as a lucrative career option. A full- fledged MSc., diplomas and fellowship programmes are available for the same. Beyond these exist the doctorate programmes.

A lot of these programmes may even be applied on distance education basis. The CMCV has always been extremely proactive when it comes to digital learning. That is why a separate portal has been created for e- learning within the college’s website. It was recognized with the Platinum Award at the SKOCH Awards in 2014. In 2015, it went on to win a highly prestigious award from the WHO (World Health Organization). One of the top advantages of this college is its association with the hospital right next door. This enables the students and interns to get a hands-on practical learning experience.

Beyond academics, the CMCV is associated with a number of social initiatives within the local community. It is associated with the CHAD (Community Health and Development) programme by which it works with tribal and rural communities in remote areas. Another such association is with the RUHSA (Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs) which is a health centre set up deep into rural territory. A primary health care programme established by the CMCV in 1987 is called the CONCH (College of Nursing Community Health). It does significant amount of work with NGOs. Another initiative is the LCECU (Low- Cost Effective Care Unit) which caters to people living in urban slums in and around Vellore.

A lot happens here beyond merely academics and research. The verdant campus allows significant amount of sporting and adventure activities to take place. Other art, cultural and social activities are also regularly held. Several medical and surgery related national level conferences are held here. Significant medical as well as national days are commemorated with some talks and discussions. The college even has an annual research day. All this and much more has helped the institute get extremely good rankings across platforms. It was recognized as the 3rd best within the category for medical colleges as part of the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework). A school has also been started by the group. It goes by the name of the founder so named, Ida Scuddder School.
