The Modern Institute of Teacher Education, Kohima is one of the well known teacher education institutions which has been set up in the year 2012 only. This is a co educational institute of higher learning situated at Kohima Nagaland; the institute is exclusively designed to train potential teachers. MITE is an affiliated college recognised by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) thus compliance to the National Norms prescribed for teacher education. The institute is located in a space of 1 acre and hence has limited infrastructure and resources so presently the institute has 197 students and 15 dedicated teachers and staff members. Currently, MITE has only one under graduate programme known as the Bachelor of Education (B.ED) with specialisation in teacher training.
MITE has many equipped facilities essential for the improvement of the performance of its students. The library system of the institute is one of the linchpins of academic library collection having a digitalized library with KOHA. It has stocked a large number of text books, reference books, periodicals, newspapers, journals supported by computer facilities and Wi-Fi internet, INFLIBNET and photocopying services. The large and adequately equipped reading room is suitable for study. A facility like e-SMS for educational facilities, interacting through WhatsApp groups, and free Wi-Fi for academic purposes is available in the college and allows using information technologies when communicating. As a result of practical training, the MITE has retained departmental based laboratories. The institute also provides a spacious air-conditioned auditorium for host of programs, cafeteria with a natural scenery of trees and a stream, firmly-established health center with first-aid facilities.
The Modern Institute of Teacher Education, Kohima, focuses exclusively on teacher education, offering a single full-time course: The B.Ed or Bachelor of Education programme-equivalent to the per-Diploma Certificate in Education for this group of students- was envisioned as a programme that will enhance the professional competence of teachers in the face of the increasing technicality of classroom teaching. This program has an approved intake of one hundred students in two years of study and this is in agreement with the institute policy that considers class sizes and quality educational delivery. B.El.Ed is designed to impart knowledge, skills and professional experience essential to make professional practices in the field of education.
