Government Sanskrit College, Thiruvananthapuram, is the oldest institution for teaching the language as well as propagating knowledge about it. As the affiliated college of the University of Kerala, this college offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs in almost every dimension of Sanskrit studies. The process of admission at Government Sanskrit College is done in a manner that recognizes the interests of students in undertaking the study of Sanskrit and related subjects.
Admitting students on merit, it stands in consonance with the culture relevant to taking this ancient language to future generations. In total, the college admits 459 students across various programs but keeps the intake small to ensure quality education and to keep classes small for a better learning environment.

Degree-wise Admission Process.
BA Sanskrit Programs:
Government Sanskrit College offers BA Sanskrit Courses with various specializations. Some of them are Nyaya, Jyotisha, Sahitya, Vedanta, and Vyakarana. Each of these courses has an approved intake of 30. Admission to these courses will be based on the performance of the candidate in the qualifying examination (10+2 or equivalent) with special emphasis on Sanskrit.
MA Sanskrit Programs:
The college offers MA Sanskrit programs in Nyaya, Sahitya, Vedanta, Vyakarana, and Jyotisha. Most of these programs have an approved intake of 5 students, except MA Sanskrit Jyotisha, which has an approved intake of 15 students. Admission to this program typically requires a bachelor's degree in Sanskrit or related field with selection likely based on the overall academic performance of the candidate in his or her degree program.
M.Phil Sanskrit:
Approved intake for the M.Phil program in Sanskrit is 13 students. Admission to this research program shall be based on the performance of the candidate in the master's degree in Sanskrit, sometimes including an entrance examination and/or interview process.
Ph.D Sanskrit:
The college offers the Ph.D program in Sanskrit with an approved intake of 44 students. Admission procedures for doctoral studies usually include rigorous selection through an entrance test and interview, along with evaluation of the candidate's research proposal.
