Established in 1937, the University of Kerala was formerly known as the University of Travancore and is one of the first 16 universities of India. Kerala University was founded by the promulgation of the Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama who was also the first chancellor of the University. There are 167 colleges that are affiliated to the University of Kerala. Kerala University is ranked 23rd in the university category for 2020 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), MHRD and the NIRF ranking for the year 2021 in the university category is 27. The university is also ranked at 43rd position in the overall category by NIRF ranking 2021. The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of “A”.
Kerala University is a state university whose mission is to create researchers and innovators and be the organization that will cater to the needs of industry and policymakers. The university is located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state of Kerala. In total, the university has sixteen facilities and forty-one departments of teaching and research. The university offers varied infrastructural facilities to its students. There are a total of six hostels out of which four are for girls and two for boys. Students must have passed higher senior (10+2) with a minimum of 45% marks.

UG admissions at Kerala University are offered on the basis of merit except for B.F.A. and B.PEd. There will be an entrance examination conducted by the university for offering admission to B.F.A and B.PEd. Students willing to take admission in B.Arch must obtain passing marks in the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA).
For postgraduate admissions, students need to appear for an entrance examination followed by a personal interview. Students seeking admission to postgraduate programmes must follow the admission process such as applying to the programme on the college website, appearing for the entrance examination and interview. The minimum eligibility criteria for admission to PG courses is that students must hold a bachelor degree in a relative discipline with minimum qualifying marks as per the course requirements.
