Ever wondered why even after being so popular, NPTEL courses don’t always translate into certification success? Despite enrollments crossing more than 3 crore learners, only a tiny sliver ends up holding a verified NPTEL certificate. The funnel illustrates a significant drop-off from the millions enrolling, to lakhs registering for NPTEL exams, to yet fewer getting certified. This NPTEL official shows the hidden critical gaps in learner engagement, assessment design and logistics.

In this article, we covered the real causes behind the low NPTEL certification conversion, using official NPTEL and government-backed statistics, exploring the “why” behind the drop-off. Read the full article below.
According to official NPTEL statistics, the overall success rate of NPTEL (students who pass the proctored exam and obtain certificates) is significantly lower compared to the massive enrolment numbers. Check the official statistics in the table below.
Semester | Enrolled Students | Registered for Exam | Successfully Certified | Success Rate |
---|---|---|---|---|
Jan–Apr 2023 | 16.5 lakh+ | 2.6 lakh+ | 1.1 lakh+ | ~42% |
Jul–Dec 2022 | 15 lakh+ | 2.4 lakh+ | 1.0 lakh+ | ~41% |
Jan–Apr 2022 | 14 lakh+ | 2.2 lakh+ | 0.95 lakh+ | ~43% |
While enrolments are in the millions, only about 15 per cent to 18 per cent of students register for NPTEL exams, and out of those, less than half earn certificates.
There are many reasons why the NPTEL certification rate is low as compared to enrollments and NPTEL registrations. Some of the reasons are mentioned below.
NPTEL has recorded over 15.8 million enrolments (1.58 crore) across its certification courses since 2014, but only 1.57 million learners registered for the certification exam. That’s less than 10 per cent of all enrollees moving forward to formal assessment. Many users join courses simply to “learn for free” without any intention to take the proctored exam or pursue the certificate.
Of the 1.57 million learners who registered for the exam, around 1.35 million actually sat the exam. From that group, only 8,94,316 learners obtained certification - a pass rate of approximately 56.8 per cent among registrants, or 5.66 per cent of total course enrollees.
Even for dedicated exam-takers, nearly half do not meet the certification criteria.
NPTEL requires learners to secure a minimum of 40 per cent in the average assignment score and 40 per cent in the final proctored exam to obtain certification. NPTEL assignments count for 25 per cent of the final grade, while the exam contributes 75 per cent. Learners must also meet minimum NPTEL passing marks in each component (not just overall aggregate), which reduces “just scraping through” options.
Many learners fail to submit enough assignments or perform adequately on them to meet the assignment minimum, which automatically disqualifies them.
Weekly assignments are a mandatory part of NPTEL’s pedagogy, but students often treat them as optional or “tick-box” exercises rather than ongoing assessments. If learners skip NPTEL assignments, their average marks may fall below the 40 per cent benchmark. Basically, NPTEL assignments disengagement acts as an early filter in the funnel.
Although NPTEL certification is optional and relatively low-cost (around Rs 1,000 per course), there are still practical hurdles:
Learners must register for the proctored exam in advance, sometimes weeks ahead. If they miss deadlines, they lose the chance.
Exams are conducted in designated centres (170+ cities in India, some remote proctoring outside India). Travelling to a centre, finding time, arranging identity verification, and coping with exam logistics can deter many learners from showing up.
Official numbers show that pass rates fluctuate wildly across semesters and disciplines:
In early, smaller-scale semesters(that is, Jan–Jun 2014), pass rates among exam-takers were as low as 46 per cent.
Some popular engineering or core science courses saw pass rates above 80–85 per cent in normal conditions (for learners who actually attempted exams).
However, during the COVID-19 pandemic and transition periods (that is, Jan–Jun 2020), exam attendance dropped sharply (from over 2 million registrations to only 0.87 million), and pass percentages fell.
Such variability suggests that course subject, semester timing, and external disruption (like the pandemic) play a major role in certification rates.
Because NPTEL courses are free to join and available on demand, many learners treat them as low-commitment “MOOCs” rather than full online programmes. Learners sometimes
enroll simply to browse or audit without submitting assignments or engaging with the weekly structure,
pause or drop out mid-course when schedules tighten,
or approach the final exam with minimal preparation, relying on partial or rushed learning at the end.
This mismatch between learner intent and certification readiness inflates the drop-off rate.
While NPTEL provides excellent video content and weekly assignments, many learners lack study groups, peer support, or institutional support(except for those affiliated via “local chapter” colleges). Learners studying entirely alone often struggle to maintain momentum, meet deadlines, or clarify doubts. In the absence of such structured support, even motivated learners can drift, disengage or under-perform, reducing the NPTEL certification rate.
Plan early: Watch lectures weekly, don’t wait till the end.
Attempt weekly assignments: Attempting and finishing weekly assignments is a must. The assignments also prepare students for the final NPTEL exam.
Use discussion forums: NPTEL has active forums where doubts can be clarified. Students are advised to join and discuss without any hesitation.
Practice mock tests: Previous year papers and practice exams are provided by NPTEL. These PYQs help in exam preparation.
The low NPTEL certification success rate reflects not just exam difficulty but also student commitment levels, exam readiness, and time management. While lakhs of students enroll, only a small fraction take it seriously enough to earn certification. With structured preparation and disciplined study, however, success is highly achievable and makes NPTEL a powerful platform for upskilling.
