A Deemed to be University of repute, the Deccan College of Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Pune, has been conducting academic programs based on various subjects-German, Hindi, English, Research in Archaeology, Linguistics, and Sanskrit. At Deccan College, postgraduate programs are offered in MA, M.Phil., Ph.D., and a plethora of diploma courses; research degrees include M.Phil. and Ph.D. In a bid to develop a system of meritocracy, PUniDeccan College has a selection procedure for subjects that are limited in their specialization. Ordinarily, the academic year begins in August-September, and the admission process begins a few months earlier. Admission to various programs would be based on different criteria, such as entrance exams, previous academic performance, and research potential. For the Ph.D. program, the admission test is administered by the institute itself; also considered for the admission are the results of national-level exams such as GATE, NET, and SET.
The eligibility criteria vary from program to program. For MA programs, the corresponding fields for undergraduate study need to be in related disciplines. The applicant must also possess a master's degree in the relevant subject area to be considered for Ph.D. admission. Admission Process per Degree
The MA Programs (Archaeology, Linguistics, and Sanskrit and Lexicography): The Deccan College offers MA program courses in Archaeology, Linguistics, and Sanskrit and Lexicography. Each of these areas has an intake of around 40 students, with MA Sanskrit and Lexicography allowing 25 admissions. The admissions process for MA programs relies on either the candidate's previous academic history or performance in the concerned bachelor's degree.
Ph.D. Programs (Archaeology, Linguistics, Sanskrit, and Lexicography): Ph.D. programs in the Deccan College are practically fully based on research. The entry into Ph.D. departments involves an entrance test conducted by the institute. However, for those who have qualified in GATE, NET, SET or have a JRF in the relevant subject from the top bodies such as CSIR, UGC, ICAR, ICMR and DBT, no entrance test is required. Overall, the institute plans to have 112 seats for Ph.D. in Archaeology, 16 seats for Ph.D. in Linguistics, and 64 seats for Ph.D. in Sanskrit and Lexicography.
M.Phil Programs: M.Phil programs are also offered in Archaeology, Linguistics, and Sanskrit and Lexicography by the Deccan College. The process for selecting students to these programs is basically the same as the selection of Ph.D. candidates, with an emphasis on research potential as well as academic background.
Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma Programs: Other than these, there are also diploma courses under this institute, including PG Diploma in Underwater Archaeology, Diploma in Heritage Sites Management and Scientific Conservation, PG Diploma in Museology, etc. Admission into these courses is made based on the relevant academic background and some interview or entrance test.
