One of the key factors that contributes to a student's comfort is finding the right place to stay. Bhubaneswar offers a range of options, from economical accommodations to more upmarket localities. Areas like Nayapalli, Patia, Chandrasekharpur, and Khandagiri are popular among students due to their proximity to educational institutions and affordable living arrangements. The cost of 1 BHK, 2BHK and 3BHK at these places ranges from Rs 5,000 - Rs 6,500, Rs 7,000 - Rs 10,000, and Rs 11,000 - Rs 15,000 respectively.
For those willing to pay a little more rent, localities like Saheed Nagar, Jagamara, Satya Nagar, Gothapatna, Pahala, Phulnakhara and Jayadev Vihar provide a mix of comfort and convenience. The cost of 1 BHK, 2BHK and 3BHK at these posh areas ranges from Rs 7,000 - Rs 8,500, Rs 9,000 - Rs 12,000, and Rs 15,000 - Rs 25,000 respectively. Some of the economical areas of Bhubaneswar are Beherasahi, Amrit Nagar, Nakhra, Janla, and Hanspala. The rent at these places is not more than Rs 8,000 for 3 BHK flats. PGs are also available in Bhubaneswar ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 per month.
Bhubaneswar caters to a variety of tastes and budgets. From street food to fine dining, students can find a lot of options that won't cost them much. Popular food streets like Shahid Nagar and Gopabandhu Square offer delicious local delicacies at reasonable prices. The monthly expense on street food doesn’t cross Rs 1,000.
Coming to the main course - ghar ka khaana, a majority of students living outside college hostels and PGs prefer tiffin service. A few cook by themselves or hire a maid to cook. The monthly tiffin service (two meals per day) costs in the range Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,500. Maid charges roughly around Rs 800 - Rs 1,000 per person per month (cooking lunch and dinner). The expenses on groceries doesn’t exceed Rs 1,500 for a single person.

Getting around in Bhubaneswar is relatively convenient and affordable. The city has a well-established public transportation system, including buses and auto-rickshaws, making commuting between the university and accommodation hassle-free. Additionally, the growing popularity of ride-sharing and bike-taxi services have further eased transportation for students. With reasonable fares, students can explore the city without worrying about excessive travelling expenses. The average monthly expenses on transportation is not more than Rs 1,100.
Beyond accommodation, food, and transportation, students often incur additional expenses on study materials, internet services, medicines, mobile recharge, weekend hangouts, and other recreational activities etc. The monthly expenditure on these ranges from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000.
Living in Bhubaneswar offers students a unique chance to explore the city's rich history and culture. From traditional Odiya cuisines like Machha Jhalo, Gupchup, Cuttack Chat, Aloo Dum, Dahi Pakhal, Badi Choora, Dalma, Santula, Pilaf, and Bamboo Mutton to sea foods like Fishes, Prawns, Crabs, and Lobsters, one can savour a variety of dishes. The city also hosts numerous food festivals, showcasing the richness of its culinary heritage.
Beyond food, Bhubaneswar is a hub for classical dance, music, and art, offering students a chance to immerse themselves in the local cultural scene.
