The institute was established in the year 1956 under the Government of India. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry is also known as JIPMER. In the year 2008, JIPMER Puducherry was declared as an “Institution of National Importance” under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India by an Act of Parliament, JIPMER, Puducherry.
