About Karnataka State Open University

Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysuru is a State Public University established by the act of State Legislature in 1992, and started functioning from June 1, 1996. KSOU was formerly known as Institute of Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education (ICC & CE) and was affiliated to the University of Mysore.

KSOU was established on account of the pursuance of National Policy on Education, NPE-1986 due to the recommendation of Central Education Advisory Board MHRD, Government of India. KSOU is mainly targeted for the working professionals, households, the disadvantaged sections of the society and people from backward regions, who cannot pursue education through conventional mode and get a chance to learn through distance education mode. KSOU encourages more and more people to join its programme through its 21 regional centres which are functioning throughout the state. KSOU is recognised by the University Grants Commission. The university offers 32 courses in undergraduate, postgraduate and post graduate diploma courses in all the major streams such as Science, Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Business Management Studies, Biological Science, Advance Science and Technology and many more.

The Pro- Chancellor of the university is Dr. Ashwath Narayan C N, who is also the honorable DCM, Minister for Higher Education, IT & BT and minister for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship & Livelihood.  

 KSOU Location

Karnataka State Open University, is located at the University of Mysore Campus, Mukhtagangotri, Mysore, Karnataka. KSOU is at a distance of 4 kms from Mysore Railway Station and 5 kms from KSRTC Bus Stand. Candidates can easily avail auto, taxi to visit the university from these places. Mysore Airport is at a distance of 15 kms from KSOU and well connected through road and highway.

Induction Programme For August Batch 2020-21 Session

Karnataka State Open University organised a 3 days online induction programme for newly admitted students 2020-21 (August batch) from January 18-20, 2021. The Registrar of the university delivered the welcomed address and the inauguration was done by Dr C.N Ashwath Narayan who is the Deputy Chief Minister & Honorable Minister for Higher Education, IT BT & Skill Development.  A special lecture on Open Distance Learning System and Self Learning in Open University was given by professor Narasimha Rao, who is the former regional director of IGNOU.

KSOU Facilities 

There are multiple facilities for students to get benefited from KSOU. Although KSOU offers all the courses via distance learning, the college boasts of having the state of the art infrastructure and modern facilities. KSOU facilities include a health centre, canteen, hostel for men and women, guest house and library.

Students can visit the health centre if they feel unwell on the university campus. There are frequent doctor visits from time to time. KSOU canteen provides the best quality hygienic and delicious food at affordable prices to the students who come in KSOU premises for any purpose. KSOU also has well-equipped men and women hostels for accommodating students. Moreover, KSOU provides spacious and hygienic accommodation with modern facilities and a pleasant atmosphere for academicians to encourage them to work in their chosen field. 

KSOU Library is housed in an independent and large building in an area of 18, 850 sq. ft, since 2007. The library remains open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m on all working days and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. during contact programmes and university exams. Furthermore, KSOU library is facilitated with computers, internet, CCTV camera for the benefit of the students. 

 KSOU Courses Offered

KSOU, Mysore offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in all the major streams such as arts, science, commerce, business management studies, education, law, applied sciences and technology, biological sciences, physical and material sciences, and social sciences. Admissions to all these courses are on the discretion of the university and the  eligible students have to go through the admission procedure for studying in this university. Eligibility Criteria for different courses offered at KSOU

 KSOU Admissions

KSOU admission is offered in the field of Science, Arts, Commerce, Law, Business Management Studies, Biological Science, Advance Science and Technology and many more to its 32 UG and PG courses. KSOU admissions occur in two cycles- November to February and May to August. KSOU UG admissions are based on the marks of 10+2 examination or its equivalent. KSOU PG admissions are based on the marks obtained in graduation level as per the requirements of the courses. KSOU admissions to UG and PG courses are the same. KSOU offers BA, BCom, B Sc, B Lib Sc programmes at UG level. KSOU offers MA, M Sc, M Com, M Lib Sc, MBA and PGDM programmes at PG level. KSOU offers admission by three modes and the candidate can apply to KSOU by his/her choice of mode.  The procedure for KSOU admissions are as follows:

• Candidates need to apply through KSOU website: www.ksoumysuru.ac.in.

• Candidates need to upload required self attested scanned documents.

• Candidates should visit the nearest Regional Centres/ HeadQuarters (Mysuru) along with necessary original documents and one set of photo copy.

• Candidates need to pay the prescribed admission fees online after verification of documents.

• Candidates are then required to collect roll number, study material and ID card.

KSOU Scholarships

KSOU has established Mukta Sanjivini Scholarship Fund to encourage poor students to continue their studies. KSOU scholarship is available to the students belonging to the economically weaker section of the society pursuing BA BCom programmes. The eligibility criteria for KSOU scholarships are as follows:

Eligibility

• Annual income of the parents of the student should be lesser Rupees One Lakh.

• Income/Caste certificate issued by concerned tehsildar should be submitted to KSOU.

• Scholarship is only available for students of second and third year of BA and BCom programmes who have successfully scored a minimum of 50% marks in their first attempt of first year examination.

• Students should not be more than 30 years of age.

• Those students who have applied for this scholarship should not have applied for any other scholarship elsewhere

Moreover, students of KSOU residing in Karnataka are eligible for the scholarships offered by the Government of Karnataka. They can also avail the central scholarship scheme such as National Fellowship and Scholarship For Higher Education Of ST Student and NEC Merit Scholarship and avail their benefit. 

KSOU Placements

KSOU Placement Cell is in charge of placement. KSOU placement cell provides job placements, higher education assistance, internships, entrepreneur support, and job guidance. KSOU placement fairs are held in order to assist students in seeking jobs. The placement cell often coordinates with different companies for the placement of students. KSOU placement cell also makes arrangements for meritorious students to be placed.
