CA Final Exam: Will ICAI Bring Back the 8-Paper Format?

Sansar Singh ChhikaraUpdated on 12 Oct 2026, 01:26 PM IST

The CA community is abuzz after a tweet on X from CA Anupam Sharma suggested that ICAI might bring the four papers into one group format for CA Final exams. He stressed that CA Final exams might come back to their older 8-paper format. Sharma further said that ICAI may publish an official notification in this regard “very soon”.

The Existing Scheme - Six Papers, Two Groups

The CA Final exam earlier had 8 papers, but after the implementation of the ICAI New Scheme of Education and Training in 2023, the number of papers in CA Final was reduced to 6. The reform aimed at reducing the burden on students and giving more flexibility. Also, ICAI announced it would conduct the CA Final exam thrice a year, a move which was later reversed. The CA Final exam is now being held twice a year in the months of May and November.

The Case for Four Subjects Per Group

Supporters of the four-subjects-in-each-group format say that depth matters more than speed in an integral profession like Chartered Accountancy. The eight-subject format in CA Final will help maintain the difficulty of the Chartered Accountancy course, making it a course that is hard to complete and rigorous. Also, with two attempts each year and eight subjects, the cost of failing the exam is higher, which will prompt candidates to have good preparation and seriousness for the profession.

CA Anupam Sharma on CA Final Possible Format Changes

The case of revamping the CA Final syllabus and subjects gained relevance on social media after Sharma hinted that from the CA Final May 2028 session, the level might again have eight subjects, instead of the existing six. Sharma quoted V S Vadivel, who stressed prioritising the quality of CAs instead of quantity. Vadivel tweeted, “ICAI should reinstate the schedule of two exams per year with four subjects per group, prioritising quality over the quantity of CAs in India.”

Supporting Vadivel’s stand, Sharma tweeted, “Sir, very soon, you may receive a notification regarding the restoration of four subjects per group. The present torchbearers of ICAI are committed to producing complete, competent and industry-ready Chartered Accountants, equipped with comprehensive knowledge and practical expertise to meet the diverse requirements of manufacturing industries, corporate groups and other sectors. The focus is on quality, professional excellence and developing well-rounded CAs capable of serving every segment of the economy.”

What ICAI Has Said So Far

ICAI has not announced any changes to the CA Final exam. However, it has set up a Committee for Review of Education and Training (CRET) to oversee changes in its existing curriculum. ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D was quoted as saying to PTI, “For an engineer, AI is a separate subject, but for us, AI is not a subject; without AI, no chartered accountant can survive. Be it in employment or in practice, AI is a must.”

This hints at the possibility of inclusion of topics like AI, data analytics, environmental, social and governance (ESG), and sustainability in the CA curriculum. According to ICAI, the committee will wrap up its findings by December this year
