Can You Pursue LLB Through Distance Learning?

An LLB degree equips learners with a thorough understanding of legal principles, judicial processes, and legislative frameworks. However, if you wonder, pursuing an LLB degree through distance education is a possible learning option. The Bar Council of India (BCI) scrapped LLB degree to be offered in distance mode. Thus, pursuing LLB through distance, online, and hybrid modes of education are not approved.

The Bar Council of India in its official communication to all vice chancellors of law universities and departments stated that LLM programmes delivered outside traditional in-person formats will not be recognised for professional enrolment or practice in India. This directive emphasises that institutions do not entertain admission enrolment through distance, online, hybrid, or blended formats.

Aspiring LLB students must note that even regular LLB degrees are required to meet BCI recognition norms. Therefore, BCI approval in any institution must be verified by the student before seeking to pursue the LLB degree. At the same time, distance/ online/ hybrid/ blended law degrees do not qualify for legal degrees under BCI rules.

Alternatives to Distance LLB for Aspiring Law Students

The Bar Council of India (BCI), has made it clear that LLB degrees cannot be pursued through distance, online, or hybrid modes, due to the required practical court training, and mandatory internships, which are not possible in remote formats. However, students can pursue full-time LLB degrees, securing exposure to real court proceedings.

While pursuing a full-time three-year LLB degree can help students gain wider exposure, it also provides opportunities for direct interaction with practising lawyers and judges. This alternative approach, instead of distance LLB, equips students with essential legal skills and the confidence to build a successful career in the legal profession.

Students are required to fulfil common eligibility criteria to pursue LLB degree, which are as follows:

LLB Admission Process

LLB admissions generally follow a certain step that is to be fulfilled by the students to secure admission to LLB courses. The following points showcase the overview of the LLB admission process:

Step 1: Registration For The Exam

• After fulfilling the LLB eligibility criteria, students must register for the relevant entrance examination (AILET, and state and institute specific examinations).
• Appear for the entrance exam on the scheduled date.

Step 2: Application Process

Fill out the application form for the desired law schools or universities.

Submit the required documents:

• Secondary education certificates (10th and 12th grade mark sheets)
• Entrance exam scorecard
• Birth certificate
• Identification proof (Aadhar card, passport, etc.)
• Passport-sized photographs
• Caste certificate (if applicable)
• Transfer certificate or migration certificate (if applicable)

Pay the application fee as specified by the institution.

Step 3: Merit List and Counseling

• Institutions will release a merit list based on entrance examination scores and academic performance.
• Shortlisted candidates may need to attend counseling sessions for seat allocation. This includes document verification and choosing a preferred course or college.

Step 4: Personal Interview (If applicable)

• Some institutions conduct personal interviews or group discussions as part of the selection process.

Step 5: Admission Offer

• Students receive a provisional admission offer based on performance in the entrance exam, counselling, and interview.
• They must accept the admission offer by paying the admission fee and confirming their seat.

Step 6: Final Admission

• Once the admission process is successfully completed, students are required to attend the institution’s scheduled orientation sessions and commence their classes for the course.

While distance, hybrid, online LLB degrees are not recognised by the Bar Council of India, aspiring lawyers can opt for full-time LLB approved by BCI. Students must always make sure to verify the institution's BCI approval status before securing admission to receive credible and legal education.
