The Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth was set up back in 2003 in Pune. Known as the DPU, the university started with only a single institute, but has now grown to be a very big brand all over Maharashtra. The group has become synonymous with educational excellence, all over western India. The university has been named after Dr. D.Y. Patil who has been a noted educationist and social reformer, all his career. A number of educational institutions, research organizations and sports academies have been named after him, due to his work in getting them started. The DPU now runs academic institutions for the academic areas of- Engineering, Law, Medical, Pharmaceutical, Education, Nursing, Dental, Bio Technology, Management and even one for Ayurveda.
The Pune- based Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth has been approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission) as a Deemed University. It has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. Several of the technical courses here have also been ratified by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). The DPU is an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified institution. The entire campus is spread over forty- three acres of land.
Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre is a constituent unit of the Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth. The former was founded in 1996, before the university got established. It got later incorporated within the university. The academics here is divided into several units. At the UG level, of course, the main course is the MBBS, which is the essential qualification to all aspiring doctors. There are a far greater number of options at the PG level. The entire academics here, is run by the several departments. The Pre- Clinical Departments are in Anatomy, Physiology and in Bio Chemistry. The Para- Clinical Departments include the areas of- Micro Biology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Pharmacology and in Pathology.
The maximum number of areas line under the Clinical Departments. These are for the areas of General Medicine, Paediatrics, Radiology, Psychiatry, Anaesthesiology, Urology, Neurology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Tuberculosis & Chest Diseases, Neuro Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery and for Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Some of these are super- specialty courses. At the master’s stage, one may get either the MD, M. Ch. or MS degrees, depending on the course of study. Admission to the various courses at the UG level is via the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). At the master’s level, it is via the NEET PG. All the academic streams are managed by a set of departments which are divided on campus, for each of these different study areas. Some doctoral programmes may also be pursued here, at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre in Pune.
One of the biggest advantages for aspiring medical and healthcare professionals to enrol at this college is that a hospital is attached right next to the medical college. This allows the students to get hands- on experience observing, practitioners among doctors, nurses, surgeons and administrators. There is also a separate Institutional Animal Health Ethics Committee, to ensure that there is no abuse of animals, kept here for testing purposes. Waste disposal, especially of the hazardous type is also with extreme care. No untreated material must be released into the water or landfills.
Research is another very important aspect at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre. To this end, the college has seen several of its faculty members get their works published on recognized academic peer- reviewed journals and trade publications. Some have even got their books published. The research is individually anchored at the level of each department. The Clinical Cancer Investigation Journal is one such recognized research journal where the works of faculty here, have been published. The DPU has also done extremely well across ranking platforms. Events are also held year- round to keep the students engaged. The Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory was recently opened up here. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
In the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework), which is powered by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), the Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth was placed rank 76th overall and 47th among universities in the year 2017. The next year, in 2018, it was likewise placed 79th overall and 52nd within the category of universities. To offset this slight dip in rankings, the medical college within the group did extremely well. It got rank 18 for all over India.
