The Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth was set up back in 2003 in Pune. Known as the DPU, the university started with only a single institute, but has now grown to be a very big brand all over Maharashtra. The group has become synonymous with educational excellence, all over western India. The university has been named after Dr. D.Y. Patil who has been a noted educationist and social reformer, all his career. A number of educational institutions, research organizations and sports academies have been named after him, due to his work in getting them started. The DPU now runs academic institutions for the academic areas of- Engineering, Law, Medical, Pharmaceutical, Education, Nursing, Dental, Bio Technology, Management and even one for Ayurveda.
The Pune- based Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth has been approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission) as a Deemed University. It has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. Several of the technical courses here have also been ratified by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). The DPU is an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified institution. The entire campus is spread over forty- three acres of land.
The entire academics here is run via the individual constituent group colleges. The DPU has a strong social outreach wing. It even maintains its own blood bank, for the sake of the community. Surveys are also anchored from the university for the areas of School Health and Nutritional Assessment. Research forms the backbone of this university, having been a key component of the top ranks achieved by the DPU. For this purpose, the management team has created a list of potential Centres of Excellence on campus. These are for the fields of – Microbial Diversity Research, Oral Pathology & Micro Biology and the Dermatology Venerology & Leprology. These will all be handled by the relevant individual departments.
The Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth from Maharashtra has also been part of several third- party research projects. A number of such assignments are generated form government or industry bodies. Some of these funding agencies have been the likes of- DST (Department of Science and Technology), WHO (World Health Organization), ICMR (The Indian Council of Medical Research), SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency), HKU (University of Hong Kong), DBT (Department of Bio Technology), JHU (John Hopkins University), CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) and Nestle besides a few more. Several research awards have also been won by the faculty and students of the DPU. Some awards have even been initiated from the campus such as the Dr. P.D. Patil Young Researcher Award.
The DPU has even filed for several patents. A number of Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) are run year- round. The DPU even has a separate wing to look after all this. That is the University Centre for Professional Education and Faculty Development (UCPEFD). A special award has been given to this university by the DST for development of scientific temper and infrastructure. The faculty of the DPU has been published across several platforms. Many of these have been extremely prestigious academic and research peer- reviewed journals. Some of the prominent ones are- the American Journal of Respiratory Care & Critical Care Medicine, Archives of Oral Biology, Asian Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical & Clinical Research, Biomedical Research, Bombay Hospital Journal, British Journal of Dermatology and the European Respiratory Journal amongst several others.
The Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth has also been extremely proactive, when it comes to forging international ties. These agreements help in research collaboration, exchange programmes and in generating consulting assignments. Partners in this regard are located all over the world in the countries of- USA, UK, Thailand, Costa Rica, South Korea, China, Malaysia, Switzerland, Tunisia and in Sweden. Some of the prominent names in this include- the John Hopkins University in Baltimore, University of Edinburgh, Napier University, London School of Training, University of Skovde, Cornell Medical School and others. Similar schemes also exist at the national level and with corporates.
The DPU has also done extremely well across ranking platforms. In the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework), which is powered by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), the Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth was placed rank 76th overall and 47th among universities in the year 2017. The next year, in 2018, it was likewise placed 79th overall and 52nd within the category of universities. To offset this slight dip in rankings, the medical college within the group did extremely well. It got rank 18 for all over India. The placement figures at the DPU have also been going north each year.
