Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a field of engineering that involves maintaining and servicing aircraft to ensure the safety and comfort of the passengers, unlike traditional engineering degrees. Aircraft Maintenance Engineering focuses on the technical and mechanical aspects of aviation maintenance. In this article, we will discuss in brief about this course.
Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, or AME, is a specialised course that trains students to inspect, repair and maintain aircraft to ensure safe operations. Unlike traditional engineering, it focuses on technical and mechanical aspects of aviation maintenance. Various degrees are offered, such as diploma, B.E/BTech, M.E/MTech, and BSc.
However, it is a licensed-based course regulated by aviation authorities such as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Government of India. To work as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, an AME license is required. The course consists of theoretical and practical sessions covering topics such as aircraft systems, maintenance physics, and aircraft aerodynamics.

AME course is divided into two parts-
Various courses are offered in the field of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. Students can study Aircraft Maintenance Engineering at diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. Listed below are the popular Aircraft Maintenance Engineering courses.
B.E/B.Tech in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a four year undergraduate degree programme. During the course curriculum, students gain theoretical and practical knowledge to troubleshoot and maintain aircraft and its components. To be eligible for the course, students must have completed their 10+2 in science stream from a recognised institute in India.
BSc in Aircraft Maintenance is generally three years, spread across six semesters. It focuses on study of emphasize aircraft systems, however, it does not focus on advanced topics such as aerodynamics and aircraft design.
The eligibility criteria of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is very similar as compared to other engineering courses. However, it also has some specific requirements. Listed below are the eligibility requirements of the AME course.
Those who have met the eligibility criteria of the course can apply for admission to the course. The admission procedure of the course is as follows.
The duration of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is four years, spread across eight semesters. In which two years are of theoretical training and the remaining two years of practical training. To get an AME License, students have to clear all the subjects. Listed below is the syllabus of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course taught during the initial two years of the course.
During the remaining two years, students undergo hands-on training in areas such as airline maintenance hangars, MRO (Maintenance Repair, and Overhaul) companies, to gain practical experience.
After completing the AME (Aircraft Maintenance Engineering) course and obtaining a license, students can explore various jobs in airports, airlines, and maintenance repair companies. Due to developments in the aviation industry, the scope of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is rising day by day. According to the DGCA, 7,54,00 licensed AME are required worldwide and due to shortage of qualified Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, the demand has increased substantially.
To conclude, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) is a promising course for students interested in working in aviation and aircraft technology. Due to development in the aviation industry, the demand for qualified Aircraft Maintenance Engineers has also increased. In the initial two years of the course, students study theoretical concepts and in the remaining two years, students have to undergo practical training.

Yes, you are eligible to pursue a second BE/B.Tech in Marine Engineering even after completing your B.Tech in Biomedical and M.Tech in Medical Instrumentation. Marine Engineering admissions focus mainly on Class 12 PCM percentage, age criteria and medical fitness rather than the branch of your previous degree. Since you are 23 and medically fit, you fall well within the required age limit followed by most DG-Approved colleges. However, you will have to join the full 4-year Marine Engineering program because lateral entry is allowed only for candidates with a mechanical or naval architecture background.
After completing the course and mandatory onboard training, you will be eligible to join the Merchant Navy as a marine engineer. So if you’re ready to invest the time and effort, shifting from your current field into a marine engineering career is definitely achievable.
All the best.

With a VIT Vellore entrance rank of 52,290 in slot 3, your chances for popular B.Tech courses like Computer Science, Electronics, or Mechanical Engineering are low because these usually require a better rank. However, you can look for other branches like Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Biotechnology. These branches may still have seats available at your rank. It’s best to check the official VIT counselling website for the latest seat availability and options for your rank slot.
With a VITEEE rank of 59,290 in slot 3, getting popular B.Tech courses like Computer Science or Electronics at VIT Vellore is difficult. But you may get other branches like Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Biotechnology at VIT Bhopal or VIT-AP campuses. You can also try courses like BCA or B.Sc in Multimedia. Check the official VIT counselling for available seats and choose the best option for your rank.
