What is Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is a course which deals with the development of the practical skills required to plan, design and execute the construction of public infrastructure. Throughout the course, students will get a deeper understanding of the various concepts involved under the broad spectrum of civil engineering and will be tasked with ways to improve existing infrastructure and modernise them to meet present requirements.

Civil Engineering as a course is always in demand as it is a very promising career path to tread, especially with India being a continuously developing country with major budgets being allocated towards public infrastructure development. Students will learn to apply their theoretical knowledge to solve real-time challenges and will be prepared to enter the industry and work on practical applications.

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Civil Engineering

Similar to many other engineering courses, the eligibility criteria for Civil Engineering courses are similar. Following is the criteria that must be satisfied to be considered eligible:

Undergraduate Civil Engineering Courses

i) Aspirants must complete their 10+2 exam from a recognised board in India.

ii) A minimum average score of 50-60% is expected along with the completion of a secondary board examination in science subjects plus mathematics.

iii) The specific cut-off for the course is subjective to the university in question, but the passing percentile usually lies with the 50-60 percentile.

iv) The results of various entrance exams such as JEE Mains/Advanced, MH CET and KCET, which takes place across India and has its cut-off is also taken into consideration.

Postgraduate Civil Engineering Courses

i) Diploma of an undergraduate degree from a recognised university in India with a relevant course such as B.Tech is required.

ii) Universities have their respective cut-offs of achieved percentile to get admission into M.Tech and Civil Engineering Courses.

Civil Engineering Entrance Exams

i)  GATE

GATE stands as an entrance point to India's top IITs and NITs colleges. This 3-hour online exam takes place on an annual basis and has approximately 10 lakh applicants which upon clearing the cut-off get access to about 1497 colleges.

ii) Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE Main)

JEE Main is an MCQ type examination conducted twice a year across India to select a limited number of candidates to admit them into several different engineering colleges. This entrance exam is the main entry point into any Engineering college. Students seeking admission in Civil Engineering can appear for the exam.

iii) Joint Entrance Exam Advanced (JEE Advanced)

JEE Advanced is an entrance examination for engineering that is conducted once a year across India and has comparatively lesser number of students that are eligible to take the examination. Those meeting the top cut-off of JEE Main entrance exam are only further allowed to undertake this examination.

BITSAT is an entrance exam solely for admissions into the Birla Institute of Technology and Science. A specific cut-off is set according to which those meeting and exceeding the cut-off are selected. Approximately 500,000 students take this entrance exam with less than 3000 seats. Students willing to take up civil engineering in BITS university must undergo this examination process.

KCET is a Karnataka based common entrance exam. The nature of the examination is offline and takes place once a year. This specific entrance exam is for those students who wish to get into any engineering stream in Karnataka based colleges. Approximately 2 lakh applicants take part in this examination upon clearing the cut-off to get access to about 211 engineering colleges.

Scope of Civil Engineering in India and Abroad

Civil Engineering has an immense long-term scope with chances of recruitment from various sectors such as major multinationals, the construction industry and even defence or military services. Therefore, there are numerous promising opportunities for civil engineering  in both the private and public sector. With their innovative sense, they must deal with individuals and solve current and ongoing problems with their analytical thinking.

Civil Engineering  courses will strengthen students to not just holistically develop themselves for the practical industry but to also work in large teams and cooperate accordingly. Required Skillset for Civil Engineering

The human resource team of any organisation is always on the lookout for the certain required skills in the candidates to get an idea about how well an individual can fit into their company's job profiles. Therefore, aspiring candidates must have an idea about the skills expected of them. Following are a list of some of the most integral skills to develop in the field of Civil Engineering:

1)  Technical Skills: First and foremost, technical skills are very essential as civil engineering professionals need to have a strong foundation of core subjects like mathematics and physics to identify and solve related problems.

2)  Attention to Detail: With the task of facing complex situations and challenges, it's not only important to come up with the right solution but to also pay attention to the smallest of details that are not visible to the common eye and see to it that the task is executed to the fullest capability.

3)  Creativity: This skill is key when it comes to this course of Civil Engineering  as many can execute the engineering process, but recruiters are looking out for those candidates who are outstanding with their creative twists to the same old basic structures.

4)  Team Player: Civil engineering students are required to work in teams, and hence communication is an important factor that will aid teamwork. It is also important to put the team's goals above self-goals to achieve success as a team.

5)  Ability to visualise: One of the fundamental skills required to be a civil engineer is the ability to visualise as without the skill, the overall blueprint will not be clear, and the plan will not be executed with a smooth flow. Therefore, the ability to visualise the final structure or output is essential to strategise work to get it done as per the clear vision.

6) Analytical thinking: civil engineering graduates continually change little aspects of a model or a framework that can, in turn, have huge effects. Distinguishing issues, investigating and creating and executing solutions requires analytical thinking at each stage.

Course Curriculum for Civil Engineering

The civil engineering course is planned in a way to impart technical knowledge and skills to candidates who are required to excel in the respective field.

Civil engineering courses integrating the principles of mathematical engineering, hydraulics, mechanics and electrical engineering allow scientific expertise and modern technology to be implemented in various structural construction processes.

According to the level of education, the basic course curriculum is subject to change across institutions. The overall curriculum, however, aims to empower students with the practical information needed to maintain and reduce the industry gap in the continuously changing field..

i am a 1st year civil engineering student from VNRVJIET and i want to go for further studies. i am in a dilemma to choose M. TECH OR MBA. if i choose m tech then what are branches in it can you please explain

Aadarsh Gupta 15th Apr, 2021

Hello aspirant,

I will suggest you to concentrate on your engineering degree now as you have too much time in choosing the option of post graduation.

Both the choices are good for you.

In M.tech you will be having more chances of becoming a professor as it is the master degree of particular field, you will be allowed be do m.tech from civil branch only as you have done your B.tech from civil.

MBA is also a good option but it deals with marketing and if you some interest in marketing so you may go for it.

Hope this helps you
