Mechanical Engineering is one of the specialisation of engineering which deals with machines; their production, design, and operation. Mechanical Engineers play a vital role in various industries such as energy conversion, biotechnology, computers, electronics, aerospace, and countless others.
A mechanical engineer’s role is to take any product through the entire journey from the idea to the marketplace. This requires them to have an understanding of the environment that any product or system, or its parts, will have to encounter, thereby designing them accordingly keeping in mind factors like durability, aesthetics, and functionality.
This discipline has an enormous depth and width which allows students several career options. Education in Mechanical Engineering equips students with analytical and creative skills that help them design a system or product, analytical tools for the achievement of their design goals, teamwork skills to design, produce and market a system, and finally, the ability to overcome any constraints along the way.

A career in Mechanical Engineering can be highly rewarding for several reasons. This is a very reputed profession enjoying high demand, with average salaries on the higher side for both public and private organizations. A Mechanical Engineer’s work involves planning, initiation, overlooking, and completing a variety of types of mechanical work, the scale of which determines how high a pay they receive.
In terms of career opportunities, these professionals can find opportunities in government organizations, management, and law among others. Therefore, Mechanical Engineering is probably one of the most lucrative, exciting, and opportunity-rich career options today.
The field of Mechanical Engineering is constantly in a state of development, what with technology advancing in leaps and bounds. Some very exciting developments are underway in the field presently, some of which include:
3D Printing- This is a complex process which involves creating the model of an object using CAD software. Also known as Additive Manufacturing, the 3D printing process is carried out by slicing the designed object into ultra-thin layers and then transferring them to the 3D printer to print them in a formation of fine plastic layers each bonded to the preceding layer. The introduction of 3D printing has brought about some incredibly significant improvements such as artwork for the blind, prosthetic limbs, etc.
Internet of Things (IoT)- A system of interrelated computing machines with unique identifiers, IoT is the ability of these machines to transfer data over networks, negating the need of any human-to-computer or human-to-human interactions. Any system of machines can become part of an IoT when assigned an IP address.
Electric Vehicles- Sustainable development is one of the top priorities of the world today, and the introduction of electric vehicles has been an enormous step in that direction. Many a decade has been spent by Mechanical Engineers in perfecting the performance, safety, and quality of cars but now, electric vehicles are set to completely alter the way these engineers work.
