During the Eleventh Five- Year Plan, there was a proposal put forward for the created of several more central universities, to tackle the shortage of quality higher education. It would also lessen the financial burden which was being created thanks to the burgeoning of private education. The proposal was then accepted and the decision was taken for the creation of twelve more such central universities, all in different states. These new central universities would come up in the states of – Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Odisha, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Rajasthan. In addition, three more existing universities in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand were to be upgraded to central university status. Admissions to all these universities is via the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET). Special provisions here are also made for the admission of foreign students.
The Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) is located in the city of Thiruvarur. It was inaugurated in the year 2009. Unlike several of its peers, the CUTN already is functioning in its permanent 517- acre campus. The entire academics is run by the specific schools. There are eleven of them, each further divided into departments. The largest of the schools is the one for Social Sciences and Humanities. There are six departments within it namely for – Tamil, Hindi, English Studies, Economics, History and Social Work. Another big one is the School of Life Sciences. This further has three departments which are for- Microbiology, Life Sciences and for Epidemiology & Public Health. A highly trending topic these days is being taken care of by the Department of Earth Sciences which runs under the school by the same name. Not to be undone, there is also space for the creative aspects. Thus, there is the Department of Music within the School of Performing Arts and Fine Arts. Another important school is the one on Basic and Applied Sciences. Within this, are the departments for Physics and Chemistry. Under the School of Mathematics and Computers Sciences, are the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science. The other schools are named as – Behavioural Sciences, Commerce & Business Management, Technology, Communication and Education & Training.
In line with a lot of international surveys and departments, the CUTN too has begun a Centre for Happiness. The task is to ensure happiness within the campus and propagation of such ideas externally. A sensible sense pf humour is to be promoted everywhere. Humorous shows, cultural activities and interactive discussions will form part of their tasks. The competencies of every human being get highlighted in this manner. There is also much research that takes place here. To this end, the Journal of Media and Communication is published by the university.
Another unique initiative at the Central University of Tamil Nadu is the conduct of coaching classes for the various competitive examinations. There is a separate Service Cell where students are trained on topics which will help them crack entrance exams such as those for banks or Central/ State services. So, subjects such as General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Data Interpretation, Research Aptitude, Reasoning and ICT are coached here. It is also a part the National Academic Depository (NAD) which stores high- quality academic content for future usage. It collates information from across sources within the country’s academic and research circles. The process of new faculty recruitments is termed creatively as “Faculty Recharge”.
Regular workshops and events are also held at the Central University of Tamil Nadu in Thiruvarur. Lectures have been imparted by external experts as well in different areas. A lot of fun events also take place year- round here. These are organized by the specific clubs and committees. The committees here are for – Grievance Redressal, Community Development, Anti- ragging, Hostel, Research Advisory, Web, Library Advisory, Official Language Implementation, and one Against Sexual Harassment. Several student activities get planned for the year. The Department of Management is set to initiate a few this year such as the Entrepreneurs’ Day. Some clubs as part of this department are for – HR, Consumer, Investors and Marketing.
The physical infrastructure too here is second to none. There is a well- equipped health centre within the campus. There is also a multipurpose auditorium. For visitors, there is a guest house with adequate room space. Ample sports facilities too exist within the campus. Students get training under central schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps). All this has helped the university be consistently ranked high up across the platforms. The university has been ranked 113th all India in the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework) within the category for universities. It has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council). The university also brings out an annual quality assurance report. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with.
