    Flexible Teaching Pedagogy At VIT

Following are some of the features of the flexible curriculum and teaching pedgogy at VIT.

Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) | VIT has implemented the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS). VIT is the first university that has introduced FFCS in its curriculum. That means students have the freedom to choose their curriculum to be the way that they want it, including the timing, the faculty, the classroom, the number of courses they want to do in a semester, etc., effectively making their own academic plan. The curriculum is also well-balanced with Engineering, Science, Humanities, and Management courses. Students have the opportunity to do inter-disciplinary courses, and also have the option to choose major/minor honours.

Innovative Curriculum | VIT adopts various engaging practices in its curriculum. One of them is Curriculum for Applied Learning (CAL), in which the courses have a project component, along with theory and lab sessions. Another is Industry Internship/In-plant Training wherein students are encouraged to do their final-year projects as interns in industries and Research and Development organisations. There’s also Semester Abroad Program (SAP) that provides the opportunities to carry out final year projects in foreign universities.

Research Opportunities | VIT also provides a lot of research opportunities in terms of funder projects/consultancy works wherein, the faculty is also involved. Students also get exposure to do journal publications and conferences. There are also specific UG research labs for students to carry out projects. Additionally, there’s also a scheme called the Fast Track Research Initiative (FTR) that provides research grants during the summer, for students to take up a problem and solve it. Of course, there are also extra curricular activities that hold two credits.

Value Added Programs | Onwards to innovation in academics, there are various Value Added Programs and industry-related hack-a-thons and make-a-thons, etc. which are part of the curriculum. Every course has an 8th module dedicated to contemporary topics, which industry experts talk to students about.

The webinar involved active interaction between the attending students and the speaker. Here are a few of the Q/A from the session.

    Q. How does a student choose his major and minor at VIT?

Sivasankaran | Major and minor subjects can be selected by students after the first two years of study. This helps the students in an interdisciplinary way of taking up new courses.

For eg., to get a BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering, students will have to take 160 credits. So, in order to get acquainted with another field of engineering like Computer Science, students should take up a specialisation programme like Artificial Intelligence, for which they will have to take up additional credits along with the ones required to get the ECE degree. Hence, the total numbers of credits for the final degree increase, and they will get a BTech in ECE with a major in AI.

    Q. Is the syllabi and curricula of all the VIT campuses the same?

Sivasankaran | No. The syllabi and curricula at VIT Vellore and VIT Chennai are the same, whereas those at VIT Andhra Pradesh and VIT Bhopal, which are state universities, are different from the above two.

But, the programmes at VIT AP and VIT Bhopal cover all the concepts that are taught at VIT Vellore and VIT Chennai. The total number of credits per degree is the same, while the programmes offered may be different.

    Q. Is there any separate quota at VIT AP?

Sivasankaran | No, there is no separate quota at VIT Andhra Pradesh. The AP government has now introduced AP Common Entrance Test, and admission to VIT programmes will also take place through it. Along with this, VITEEE ranks will also be considered for admission to the universities.

    Q. If a student is unable to attend the VITEEE counselling, can their parents attend the counselling process on their behalf?

Sivasankaran | As the counselling is going to be held in online mode, students themselves can attend the VIT counselling from the comfort of their homes.

    Q. Who is eligible for the VIT International Transfer Programme? What is the fee structure for it?

Sivasankaran | VIT offers a 2-year International Transfer Programme facility to its students. It is not mandatory. Students who wish to opt for this programme can contact the Office of International Relations at VIT. Students opting for this programme will have to allow us to share their credit score with the international university they have applied to. If they meet the eligibility criteria of the international university, they will be transferred. The fee for the first two years is as per the VIT fee structure, and for the next two years, it will be as per that of the university that the student has taken transfer to.

    Q. Is the VIT Study Abroad Programme for all the students, or only for BTech students?

Sivasankaran | The Study Abroad Programme is open to all students who are pursuing their final project as per their programme.

    Q. Is there a quota of seats which are to be filled through VITEEE and Andhra Pradesh Common Entrance Test at VIT, AP?

Sivasankaran | No, there are no seat quotas which are to be filled through VITEEE and Andhra Pradesh Common Entrance Test at VIT, AP.

The VITEEE counselling will take place as per schedule. Students can appear for VIT counselling based on their VITEEE rank, or the Andhra Pradesh Common Entrance Test rank.

    Q. What are ‘super dream offers’?

Sivasankaran | Salary packages which are higher than normal CTC are known as super dream packages. On average, the packages offered to VIT students in campus placements range between Rs 4 lakh to Rs 35 lakh per annum. Students may receive more than one offer. For eg, if a student gets a CTC of Rs 4 lakh, they will be eligible to sit in the selection process for a super dream company, which is likely to offer them a higher CTC than the previous company.

    Q. Which course has the highest demand at VIT?

Sivasankaran | In terms of placement and admissions, all the courses at Vellore Institute of Technology have almost the same demand. We have been able to place 95% of the eligible students in good companies. Each programme has its unique future and curriculum, which in turn makes the student industry-ready. However, having said that, in the last three to four years, BTech in Computer Science Engineering has been the most sought after programme.
