Before diving into the preparation strategy, it is necessary to understand the NPTEL Scoring criteria and calculation for toppers for online certification exams. The NPTEL exam is not simple and it requires strategic balance between your assignments and an understanding of the core concepts.
Candidates who get a consolidated score (Assignment score + Exam Score) of 40 or more are given a certificate. The certificate will display Elite + Gold, or Elite, or Successfully Completed.
The score criteria is as follows:
| Score | Type of Certificate |
|---|---|
>=90 | Elite + Gold Medal |
60-89 | Elite |
40-59 | Successfully completed |
<40 | No Certificate |
Certificates of Toppers in each course will display a Topper Stamp. The Topper stamp with 1%, 2% & 5% is displayed in the certificate.
If (certified candidates <= 10) and final score >= 60 --> 1 Topper
If (certified candidates > 10 to <= 50) and final score >= 60 --> 2 Toppers
If (certified candidates > 50 to <= 100) and final score >= 60 --> 5 Toppers
If (certified candidates > 100 ) and final score >= 60 --> 1 % of Certified candidates
--> 2 % of Certified candidates
--> 5 % of Certified candidates
So the Topper stamp depends on the number of certified candidates in a course + the final score.

NPTEL gives scores based on the assignments and final exams.
Final Score (Score on Certificate): The final NPTEL exam score is a combination of the assignment marks (25%) and proctored final exam marks (75%). Students have to perform well in both to get a 95+ score.
Assignment Score: NPTEL counts the best 6 out of 8 assignment scores for an 8-week course. For a 12-week course, it counts the best 8 out of 12 assignments.
This means, if some assignments are dropped, students still should submit every single one within the given deadline and stay engaged with the study materials every week.
The first and most important preparation strategy to score well in NPTEL exams is to work on assignments consistently.
If your course is 8 weeks long, work on each assignment so that your best assignments help you get into the toppers’ list.
If it is a 12-week course, try to make many assignments out of 12 to be counted as best.
Use digital forums to discuss assignments and subjects to clear your doubts when you get stuck on a difficult question.
As the exam approached, start revising all your assignment answers and study the PPTs provided at the end of each video.
NPTEL exams consist of 50 multiple-choice questions, with each question valued at 2 marks, totaling 100 marks.
A learner has to pass the NPTEL exam with 40 or above marks out of 100 marks in both assignments and final exam to get an NPTEL certificate. This means you have to clear the NPTEL exam with a score of 10 out of 25% in the assignment and 30 out of 75% in the final proctored exam.
