The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is a joint initiative of IITs and IISc and funded by the Ministry of Education (MoE) Government of India. Launched in 2003, NPTEL offers web and video courses across 23 disciplines. NPTEL certification courses are offered twice a year: January-June, and July-December. Enrolling in NPTEL courses is free of cost. However, there is a proctored certification exam that learners can take for a nominal fee at the end of the course to earn certificates from the IITs and IISc.
NPTEL exams are conducted in person across India in more than 200 cities in two shifts. Learner has to appear at the designated exam centre to participate in the NPTEL certification exam. The NPTEL exam involves weekly assessments holding 25% weightage and the final exam carrying 75% weightage, totalling 100 marks. Students have to score minimum 40 marks or above to pass the NPTEL exam: a minimum of 10 out of 25% in the assignment and 30 out of 75% in the final proctored exam.

NPTEL National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (session 2026)
The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning has started the enrolment to NPTEL courses for July-December 2026 semester. The start date of NPTEL courses for the July 2026 semester is July 20, 2026. The enrolment to NPTEL online courses will close on July 27, 2026 for 4 week (Set 1) and 8 week (Set 1) courses and August 17, 2026 for 12 week, 4 week (Set 2), and 8 week (Set 2) courses.
NPTEL Exam Registration Fee
Candidates have to register for the NPTEL certification exam and pay the NPTEL exam fee of Rs 500 - Rs 1000 based on the choice of course.
NPTEL exam pattern follows weekly assignments and a final proctored examination. The total NPTEL passing marks are made of 25% of the Assignments and 75% from the final exam.

Candidates can check and download their NPTEL results on the official website, nptel.ac.in, using their registered email ID and date of birth as NPTEL login credentials. After the declaration of NPTEL results, the authority gives students a specific timeline to report issues on NPTEL exam scores. Students can also download the NPTEL certificate from the official website.
The minimum NPTEL passing mark is 40 per cent out of 100 marks. Candidates must score 40 marks or above, which include a minimum score of 10 out of 25% in the assignment and 30 out of 75% in the final proctored exam.

For an objective online exam, NPTEL exam results and the e-certificate are released approximately 2-3 weeks after the exam date. For a pen/paper subjective exam, NPTEL results and the e-certificate are made available approximately 5 to 6 weeks after the exam. Candidates can check their NPTEL results on the official website.
Yes. Candidates can participate in a maximum of 12 NPTEL certification exams in one semester. There will be 2 exam sessions on each exam day. So, candidates can take two exams per day. They need to have the same registered email ID for all courses to have two different sessions on the same day in the same exam centre. NPTEL will allot sessions accordingly and the sessions will not clash.
NPTEL exams for July 2026 semester will be conducted on September 19 and 20, 2026 and October 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25, 2026.
