    Of the 54,924 Indian graduates who wrote the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) in 2022, 1, 769 had chosen to study MBBS in Bangladesh and graduated from 61 top medical colleges in Bangladesh. This is the third-largest section of the 470 foreign medical colleges from which Indian graduates wrote the FMGE.

    In this article, we discuss the value of an MBBS in Bangladesh for Indian students, especially for graduates who intend to build a career in medicine back home in India. Students have to eventually clear the FMGE exam, a licensure examination that allows foreign medical graduates to practise modern medicine or pursue further education in India. In 2022, 793 of 1,769 Indian graduates who completed MBBS in Bangladesh cleared the FMGE – which makes their pass percentage 44.80 per cent, significantly higher than the overall FMGE pass percentage.

    Over the past few years, and all through the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of medical colleges in Bangladesh for Indian students has only grown, from 43 in 2019 to 61 in 2022.

    The pass percentage of Indian students from Bangladesh medical colleges who wrote the FMGE over the last four years surpassed the overall pass percentage in the FMGE which stood at 23 per cent.

    Top Medical Colleges in Bangladesh for Indian Students: Factors

    Only two of the 61 colleges which are popular for MBBS in Bangladesh for Indian students cleared the basic checks of having accreditation, a hospital for practical training, an official website and a global ranking.

    In this article, Careers360 has analysed 10 colleges with the maximum number of students appearing for FMGE 2022 after completing medical education at top medical colleges in Bangladesh. These colleges have been first categorised based on ownership i.e. government-owned and privately-owned.

    Further, we have analysed the government and privately-owned top medical colleges in Bangladesh based on the above criteria. We have also compared the Bangladesh MBBS fees of the 10 colleges with the annual fees of MBBS in India.

    MBBS in Bangladesh: Ownership Of Colleges

    A look at the ownership details available for the 61 medical colleges from which Indian graduates appeared for FMGE in 2022 revealed that:

    • 37 medical colleges in Bangladesh are privately-owned

    • 19 medical colleges in Bangladesh are government-owned

    • Ownership details of eight medical colleges could not be ascertained

    From the information available, it was found that the top medical colleges in Bangladesh with the maximum number of Indian graduates appearing for FMGE are mostly owned by private bodies in the country, offering MBBS in Bangladesh for Indian students. These are listed below.

    • Rangpur Community Medical College

    • Kumudini Women's Medical College

    • Prime Medical College

    • Zainul Haque Sikder Women’s Medical College And Hospital

    • East West Medical College

    • Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College

    • Eastern Medical College Comilla

    From these private medical colleges 667 medical graduates took the FMGE in 2022.

    Of them, 279 students cleared the exam. Here the FMGE 2022 pass percentage of medical graduates is 41.82 per cent.

    The other two colleges to which are popular for MBBS in Bangladesh for Indian students with the maximum number of Indian students appearing for FMGE are government-owned. These are listed below.

    Government Medical Colleges in Bangladesh

    • Institute Of Applied Health Sciences, Chittagong Medical University

    • Dhaka National Medical College & Hospital

    These two government medical colleges had 231 students appearing for FMGE 2022. Of them, only 64 passed. The pass percentage of these government-owned medical colleges in Bangladesh is 27.6 per cent.

    The pass percentage of FMGE in 2022 is higher for privately-owned medical colleges in Bangladesh.

    MBBS from Bangladesh: Accreditation

    Accreditation is proof of an educational institution's commitment to quality standards. This certification is issued after a review by nationally or privately-recognised accrediting authorities. All eight privately-owned Bangladeshi medical colleges considered here are accredited by the Medical body of the country – the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.

    MBBS in Bangladesh: Medical College Hospitals

    The National Medical Commission (NMC) requires Indian medical colleges to be affiliated to functioning hospitals to enable practical training for medical students. It also requires students of foreign medical colleges to complete an internship in their own institution to be eligible to write the FMGE.

    Of the eight privately-owned Bangladeshi medical colleges, only Zainul Haque Sikder Women's Medical College And Hospital has not mentioned the compulsory one-year internship along with its MBBS programme.

    This is the same college whose hospital ownership details weren’t clear either. Careers360 could not ascertain if Zainul Haque Sikder Women's Medical College And Hospital has its own hospital or is affiliated with one. The remaining seven colleges have hospitals.

    MBBS Colleges in Bangladesh: Ranking

    The foreign medical institutes have been ranked by ranking authorities such as Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Times Higher Education (THE), the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

    However, none of the above-mentioned Bangladeshi medical colleges are ranked by a global ranking agency.

    MBBS in Bangladesh for Indian Students: Duration and Degree

    The MBBS programme in India involves four-and-a-half years of theoretical education and a one-year compulsory practical training. However, the name of the medical undergraduate degree varies from country to country, and even the duration of an MBBS or equivalent degree might differ. For example, students after taking MBBS admission in Bangladesh undergo a five-year medical undergraduate programme followed by one year of compulsory internship. Bangladesh provides an MBBS degree to its medical undergraduates.

    All the above-mentioned Bangladeshi private medical colleges except Rangpur Community Medical College (RCMC) follow the standard duration of the five-year MBBS programme. RCMC appears to have a six-year MBBS programme followed by an internship.

    Bangladesh MBBS Fees for Indian Students

    The average annual fee for medical studies in private Indian colleges is roughly Rs 17 lakh. This amount contrasts sharply with the average annual expense of pursuing MBBS abroad, which is roughly Rs 6.81 lakh per year. Careers360 has analysed the MBBS courses fees in Bangladesh for Indian Students. The MBBS in Bangladesh for Indian students fee structure in private medical colleges ranges from Rs 8,00,676 to Rs 72,961.

    Bangladesh MBBS Eligibility

    In India, every medical aspirant must qualify the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) to be admitted to a medical college. Even for MBBS admission in Bangladesh, Indian candidates must first pass NEET UG, secure the NMC’s permission to study MBBS abroad if they intend to ever work in India.

    Careers360 checked the Bangladesh MBBS eligibility criteria of the above-mentioned private Bangladeshi medical colleges and several allow Indian students to take admission without NEET as well. But for Indian students planning to return to India, qualifying NEET is necessary for them to be eligible for FMGE.

    Both of the above-mentioned government-owned colleges for MBBS in Bangladesh are accredited by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.

    Hospital

    For those seeking MBBS admission in Bangladesh, Careers360 could not ascertain whether these colleges offer a year of compulsory internship to international students. Careers360 could also not ascertain if the Institute Of Applied Health Sciences, Chittagong Medical University is associated with a hospital or not. The other government medical college, Dhaka National Medical College & Hospital, clearly has a hospital.

    Study MBBS in Bangladesh: Website

    Both government-owned Bangladesh medical colleges have fully functional websites.

    Bangladesh MBBS Eligibility

    Indian students must clear NEET to take admission to Dhaka National Medical College & Hospital. Careers360 could not find any details on Bangladesh MBBS eligibility to take admission to the Institute Of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS). That said, whether IAHS insists on NEET or not, Indian students need to have cleared it to return to practise in India.
