Of the batch enrolled in the academic year 2019-2020 at the top colleges across West Bengal, more than 92 per cent students graduated in 2021-22. Of these graduates, just 11.3 per cent students of BA, BSc and other three-year undergraduate degree programmes were placed. A vast majority, which is 62 per cent, opted for further education.
Compared to the other states that have a high number of colleges, West Bengal had the second highest percentage of students graduating after Delhi. In 2023, National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), ranked 100 colleges of which eight were from West Bengal.
The colleges shared data on intake, the capacity, enrollment, graduation and placement with NIRF which was made public recently. The latest statistics in NIRF 2023 is for the batch that was enrolled in three-year degree programmes from 2019-20 with 2021-22 as the last academic year under consideration. In the NIRF 2023, these eight West Bengal colleges together had an intake capacity of 6,743 students but enrolled only 6,114 students, 629 seats of these top colleges remained vacant.
Shown below in the graph are the top five colleges and how each of them fared with enrollment, graduation and placement. As per the NIRF 2023, these colleges became the most valued top five institutes in Bengal which offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in different areas.
Among the five states and union territories with the maximum number of colleges ranked in the NIRF, West Bengal’s colleges together had the second lowest placement rate of 11.3 per cent. Maharashtra’s colleges being the lowest with 9.12 per cent; Tamil Nadu’s placement rate was over 32.37 per cent; Kerala’s was 17.4 per cent; and Delhi’s 22.41 per cent.
Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Howrah which is popular for undergraduate courses like BA and BSc and postgraduate courses like MA and MSc, is the top college with 21 per cent of placed students. Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College had the most students opting for higher studies which is around 97.75 per cent.

More than nine per cent of the intake capacity remained vacant among all the colleges on this list. Also West Bengal could give only information on only 72.94 per cent of the student pool. Remaining 27 per cent students' information was not available in NIRF.
The state ranks second, among the top five states with maximum colleges ranked in NIRF, in producing the highest number of graduates in 2021-22, and when it comes to students choosing higher education post completing their graduate studies it has secured the top spot.
Although West Bengal had only eight colleges among the top 100, it had two colleges who were the part of top 10 institutes across the country.
