Over the last three years, the overall campus placement for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has decreased by over five percentage points.
IIT Kanpur was established in 1959 and is among the oldest IITs in India. As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021 and 2020, IIT Kanpur holds the fourth rank in engineering.
To get a better picture of IIT Kanpur’s placement performance, Careers360 evaluated data on the 2020-21 campus job drive for BTech, received through a Right to Information application. Branch-wise placement report, as well as salary details, are given below.
Given below is the overall placement performance of IIT Kanpur in the last three years, starting from 2018-19. The overall placement performance decreased by 9.03 percentage points over that period.

Enrolment data were not available for the IIT Kanpur BTech batch studying from 2017 to 2021. However, the institute shared data on the number of students registered for placements and the number actually placed.
The total number of students who registered for placement was 442 in 2020-21. The highest number, 92 students, was from Electrical Engineering followed by 84 from Computer Science and Engineering and Civil Engineering with 65 students. The Biological Sciences and Bioengineering department has the lowest number of students participating in campus placement with just 16 students.
In 2020-21, an average of 76.04 percent of students got jobs, that is, 359 students out of the 442 students who registered for placement.
Material Science and Engineering and Biological Sciences and Bioengineering are the two branches with placement rates lower than the overall average.

IIT Kanpur could not disclose the minimum and maximum salaries received by its students in 2021. The data for different engineering branches make an average domestic package of Rs 20.19 lakh per annum. Individually, only two branches of engineering were able to cross this average at IIT Kanpur – Computer Science Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
