About Govindammal Aditanar College For Women, Tiruchendur
The Govindammal Aditanar College for Women (GACW) is based in the state of Tamil Nadu. To be precise, it is located in the town of Tiruchendur, which lies in the Thoothukudi district. As the name of the college suggests, it is a girls’ only institution. It was founded in the year 1987, by Shri Sivanthi Adinathan. The Aditanar Educational Trust runs this institution and several other educational initiatives in the state. The college campus runs over a total area worth forty- nine acres of land. The GACW is affiliated to the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), based out of Tirunelveli, in the same state of Tamil Nadu. This university was carved out of the Madurai Kamraj University, back in 1990.
This affiliation to the MSU, ensures that the Govindammal Aditanar College for Women meets the approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission). The college has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council). A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. Courses are offered here at the GACW, right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the undergrad level, one may opt for a B.A. in the areas of- English, Economics and in Tamil.
The BSc. at the same level can be taken up in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany and in Computer Science. One can also go for the professional course of BCA. Some commerce and management courses have also subsequently been added up. These are the B. Com and BBA courses. The said B. Com may also be taken up with the added specialization of Computer Applications. Likewise, at the master’s level, there is the scope here for doing an M. Com. The MA option remains open for the languages of Tamil and English. MSc. meanwhile can be done in Computer Science, Physics and in Mathematics.
In addition, students here may go for the M. Phil and doctoral programmes too. These of course, involve tremendous amount of research and field work. Commerce and Mathematics are respectively the main options available here for the two levels mentioned. The Govindammal Aditanar College for Women also provides options for several certifications. These are often taken up as an add- on by the enrolled students, or even by some external ones. Working professionals may often avail them to facilitate their skill development. The courses on which certifications may be availed here at the GACW are for- Yoga, Gandhian Thought, Business Communication, Vermiculture Technology and for Food Chemistry & Technology.
The entire academics here is run by a group of departments, each with expertise in its designated domain area. There are departments here for each of the academic areas mentioned. Some non- academic departments also exist here. The GACW has also paid a lot of importance to the broader social good. This is the reason that students studying here have participated in several central and state government schemes. Participation has been strong in schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the Youth Red Cross Society. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for the girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where some outdoor games may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The campus has adequate IT infrastructure. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. Convenience stores and banks with ATM facilities are located close to the college premises. There is also a large parking lot, for those students, faculty or staff members who wish to drive to college.
