electronic confoguration of d7 in strong ligand case
Hi,
The electronic configuration of d orbital in metals in prescene of strong field ligand and weak field ligand is explained with the help of crystal field theory.
In the presence of strong field ligand the electron prefer to be paired hence they form low spin complex.
Let us take the example of d7 octahedral complex.
In this case due to the crystal field the d orbital splits into eg and t2g state. The t2g is of lower energy and eg is of higher energy. So electron will be filled in lower energy orbital first.
As the ligand is strong it will cause large energy gap between t2g and eg. So after singly filling the electron in t2g the electron the next electron instead of going to eg will fill in the t2g causing the pairing.
So the electronic configuration of d7 in prescence strong ligand will be
t2g (6) eg(1) .
