The current average age of a family of four members A, B, C and D is 15 years. find the average age (in years) of the family after 5 years.

Let the age of A ,B,C,D are a,b,c,d respectively.
Then average age=(a+b+c+d)/4
which is given .
(a+b+c+d)/4=15
or,a+b+c+d=60...(i)
now after 5 years the age of A,B,C,D would be a+5,b+5,c+5,d+5 respectively.
Then the average age after 5 years would be
(a+5+b+5+c+5+d+5)/4
=(a+b+c+d+20)/4
=(60+20)/4 (from (i))
=80/4=20
Then average age=(a+b+c+d)/4
which is given .

Current Avg Age of 4 members = 15 years
Sum of All 4 Members = 15*4 = 60.
After 5 years, there will be increase in sum of 20 years (5*4). So the new Avg will be : 60+20 =80 years
New Avg, 80/4 = 20 years.
