What are some important points to remember about mitochondria regarding NEET ?
Hello Aspirant,
Some important notes about mitochondria -
Popularly known as the “Powerhouse of the cell,” mitochondria (singular: mitochondrion) are a double-membrane-bound organelle found in most eukaryotic organisms.
They are found inside the cytoplasm and essentially functions as the cell’s “digestive system.”
They play a major role in breaking down nutrients and generating energy-rich molecules for the cell.
Many of the biochemical reactions involved in cellular respiration take place within the mitochondria.
The term ‘mitochondrion’ is derived from the Greek words “mitos” and “chondrion” which means “thread” and “granules-like” respectively.
It was first described by a German pathologist named Richard Altmann in the year 1890

Hello Student,
For NEET you may memorize the following informations about mitochondria
Points to remember about Mitochondria
- They were discovered by Kolliker
- The term mitochondria wa given by Benda
- Size is 0.2-1.0 micrometer in diameter and 1-4 micrometer in length
- Outer Membrane : More permeable due to the presence of more Porins
- Inner Membrane : Selectively Permeable, has infoldings called cristae
- Inner membrane bears F0-F1 particles or oxysomes which have ATPase activity and is a part of ETC - Electron transport chain in cellular respiration
- Kreb's Cycle occurs in mitochondrial matrix
- They are Semi-Autonomous structures which divide by Fission.
- Have prokaryotic single circular 70S DNA , few RNA particles and ribosomes as well.
- Show cytoplasmic Inheritance
Hope this helps you.
