The global semiconductor industry is growing rapidly, due to advancements in nano-scale IC fabrication/process technologies and new requirements for SoC (System-on Chip) and ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) chips for growing application areas driven by research in AR/VR (Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality), 5G, IoT (Internet of Things), Edge Computing, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Machine Learning. With over 1,00,000 VLSI design engineers, India is home to around 20 per cent of the world's semiconductor design workforce. As per a reports by the ESSCI (Electronics Sector Skills Council of India) and IESA (India Electronics and Semiconductor Association), India is home to over 200 semiconductor design and embedded software companies and therefore it is an opportunity, presenting itself. Riding on a projected industry growth rate (CAGR) of 10.1 per cent as estimated by the ESSCI, the semiconductor ecosystem across India is expected to employ around 3 lakh people by 2025-26.

Eligibility Criteria

Prospective students should have successfully completed any one of the following programmes:

Bachelor of Engineering (BE) / Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in CSE / CS / EE / EC / IC / ICT / IT or equivalent from a recognised university;

Master of Science (MSc) in Computer Science / Electronics / Physics;

Bachelor of Science (Honours), 4-year duration, with a major in CS / IT / Electronics / Physics;

Master of Computer Applications (MCA);

The aggregate marks in the qualifying degree should be minimum 60% or an equivalent cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Candidates appearing for the final semester/ final year may also apply.

Admission Details

Admissions to the MTech in Semiconductor and VLSI Design can be taken via three alternate routes:

Category-A: For graduates from (a) a CFTI (Centrally Funded Technical Institution) under the Ministry of Education of the Govt. of India, viz., IITs, NITs, IISc, IIITs, and IISERs, and others) OR (b) Central University, OR (c) Ahmedabad University. The GATE score is not required. Admission will be on the basis of an Interview.

Category-B: For graduates with a valid GATE score in any one of the GATE subjects of Computer Science and Information Technology / Electronics and Communication / Electrical / Instrumentation / Physics. Admission will be on the basis of an Interview.

Category-C: For graduates from institutions/universities other than CFTIs (of Category A above) who do not have a valid GATE score, admission will be on the basis of a Written Test followed by an Interview. The written test will be conducted on campus by the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The written test will be of 2 hour duration, consisting of multiple choice and short questions. Successful candidates will be required to appear in an Interview after which the admission decision will be made.
