Established in 1984, NEC Kovilpatti was built by the National Educational and Charitable Trust, Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi district under a self-financing model sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu government. The college is an autonomous institute affiliated to the Anna University, Chennai. There are a total of 12 undergraduate and postgraduate courses available at the college.

The college provides courses in B.E./B.Tech and M.E./M.Tech. NEC Kovilpatti offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in Engineering and Architecture, as well as Computer Application and Information Technology. Admissions to National Engineering College's B.Tech programmes are based on TNEA Counseling, which is conducted by Anna University in Chennai. TANCET or GATE scores, as well as participation in Anna University's Tamil Nadu Common Admissions, are accepted by NEC Kovilpatti for M.Tech programmes.
