The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Sardar Patel College of Engineering is located in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. The college was founded in the year 1962 by the Bharati Vidya Bhawan (BVB) as the Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE). Right from inception, the college was divided into aided and unaided courses. From 2005 onwards, the unaided courses were separated and an independent college by the name Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT) was created. Both these colleges are now affiliated to the University of Mumbai, located in the capital of Maharashtra state. This affiliation also ensures approval from the UGC (University Grants Commission).
The SPIT and the SPCE share the same forty- seven- acre campus in Mumbai. The same campus, also houses the A.H. Wadia High School, Bhavan’s College and the SP Jain Institute of Management and Research. The Sardar Patel College of Engineering has also been accredited by both the NBA (National Board of Accreditation) an (National Assessments and Accreditation Council). A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. The technical courses are also ratified by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education).
Courses are available here at the SPCE right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the undergrad level, the. Four- year B. Tech programme is available for the engineering areas of- Civil, Mechanical and Electrical. At the master’s level, the courses get more technical. So, the M. Tech programmes are available for the areas of- Structural Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Construction Management, Machine Design and for Power Electronics & Power Systems. Some such programmes may even be taken up on a lateral entry mode. Doctoral programmes may be undertaken in civil and mechanical areas.
The SPCE is also a signatory to the QIP (Quality Institutional Placement) programme funded by the AICTE. The NITs (National Institutes of Technology) and the NITTTR (National Institutes of Technical Teachers Training and Research) are also members of this. The purpose of the programme is to increate the capacities and expertise of the trainers. The institute is also a key facilitator of a Ministry of HRD initiative with the World Bank. It is a programme titled TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme). The entire academics at the Mumbai- based SPCE is divided into a cohort of four departments, each possessing the expertise in its own area. The departments here are for the engineering areas of Civil, Mechanical, Structural and Electrical.
The SPCE is also a member of several professional bodies, whose memberships have been availed. These are for the CEA (Civil Engineers Association), MESA (Mechanical Engineering Students Association), EESA (Electrical Engineering Students Association), ISHRAE (Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers) and the TESA (Thermal Engineering Students Association). The college also publishes several in- house magazines. One of them is called the Sukarma, while another is Disha. A newsletter by the name of Communication Times, also gets published on campus.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM, convenience stores and access to public transport, may all be availed just outside the main campus. There is a sports field where outdoor sports may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
All this and much more has led to healthy rankings across platforms for the SPCE. The NIRF has placed the college within the 101- 150 band for the engineering colleges’ category. The Careers 360 magazine has also placed the SPCRE within the AAA+ margin. The placements have likewise stayed up. Periodic industry interaction sessions are also organized for the students.
