how to find percentage of s character in c-o bonding
Hello Aspirant,
As per Bent's rule, a more electronegative element decreases the % of s character in the bond or electronegative element occupy the position where s character is less.
Also, lone pair increases the percentage of s character or lone pair occupy the position where s character is more.
Order of S character is given below for each hybridization ,
sp> sp2 > sp3> sp3d
You can also use the formula given below to find out % of s character in hybridized orbitals,
= No. of s orbitals ×100÷ no. of total orbitals
For example, let's consider sp hybridization, and check the % of s character,
~ 1×100 ÷2 = 50%
And for sp2 hybridization,
~. 1 ×100÷3= 33.3 %
