The National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli was established in 1964 as a joint venture by the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu and is one of 31 National Institutes of Technology established to produce world-class engineers to meet the nation's growing technological needs. Under the National Institute of Technology Act 2007, NIT-T has been declared an institution of national importance. In 2003, the UGC/AICTE and the Government of India approved the institute becoming a deemed university and renaming it National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T).
