Essential Qualification: Ph. D. with first class at the preceding degree or equivalent with a very good academic record. Candidates with M. Tech. degrees may be appointed as Assistant Professors, on contract basis only.

Degree shall be the minimum qualification for a regular faculty position in NIT. Candidates with M. Tech. degrees may be appointed as Assistant Professors, on contract basis only.
In case of NITs, assistant professor posts are generally divided into two categories- 1)Assistant Professor (on Pre-PhD contract) and 2)Assistant Professor (Regular).
The baseline criteria are similar across most of the IITs or NITs, i.e A PhD in relevant area of specialisation or a Masters degree is compulsory(with a good academic record). Additionally, a minimum of 3 years of post-PhD experience in research/teaching/industry and a minimum of 3 research publications in referred high-impact or quality journals is really important.
If a candidate doesn't have 3 years of post-PhD experience, he/she can be considered for tenure-track position of Assistant Professor (provided one has good publications).
