What is deemed university? And whats the major differences relating to other university?
As on 1st January 2020, there are 127 deemed to be universities in India.
In general, two types of Universities are there in India - 1. Affiliating and 2. Non-Affiliating.
Affiliating universities are either Central or State, authorised by the Union of India or individual state governments.
Central Universities are funded by the Govt. of India and so, they comparatively have low fees structure. Chancellor of Central Universities is the Vice-President himself or any central dignitary.
But as far as State Universities are concerned, they can be either private or under State govt. They are funded by respective state governments and almost 85% of their seats are reserved for the candidates belonging to that state. Governor is the Chancellor of state universities under State govt.
Private state universities are regulated by the individual State govt.
Now, you may know about UGC - University Grants Commission - which can accredit the deemed status to higher educational institutes, popularly known as : Deemed-to-be-University.
"A deemed university is any non-affiliating higher educational institute, working at a very high standard in specific area of study, can be declared by the MHRD, Central Government on the advice of the UGC as an Institution Deemed-to-be-University."
It can function independently, irrespective of the State govt. protocols. It receives the academic status and privileges of a University. It can frame its own syllabus, course duration and fee structure, conduct its own exams and award degrees of its own. It does not need any affiliations to set up its regulations.
Such institutes are not established and funded by government bodies. They were once a private institute or college, getting the recognition of 'deemed university' for showing high-grade performance and availability of enhanced facilities. They are good repositories for latest education and research methodologies.
In some deemed universities, there can be slight chances of partiality between students and the faculty members and sudden rise in fee structures as the institute itself has the full autonomy for setting up its rules and regulations.
However, deemed universities are accountable to keep direct transparency with the UGC vigilance section.
Hope this answer will help you.
Hello Anish,
Deemed university or deemed to be university is an accreditation awarded to higher educational institutions in India, conferring the status of a university.
Deemed is a status of autonomy granted to be a university by DHE under MHRD, on the advice of UGC.
Deemed Universities enjoy full autonomy or independence in deciding courses, syllabus, admissions and fees. These universities continue to perform well, can get the status of a full fledged university.
Hope it helps.
Good Luck!
