what is partition of Bengal what are it's consequences
Dear Student,
The Partition of Bengal in 1947 , divided the British Indian province of Bengal based on the Radcliffe Line between the Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. The Hindu-majority West Bengal became a state of India, and the Muslim-majority East Bengal (now Bangladesh) became a province of Pakistan.
Consequences of the partition of Bengal :-
- The partition of Bengal provoked people all over India. All sections of the Congress - the Moderates and the Radicals, as they may be called - were against it.
- Large public meetings and demonstrations were organized and novel methods of mass protest evolved.
- The struggle that developed came to be known as the Swadeshi movement, powerful in Bengal but with echoes elsewhere too - in deltaic Andhra for instance, it was known as the Vandematar.
